Bar Cycle – the proud return of a Siem Reap icon

Back before Covid-19 decimated tourism in Siem Reap you would see tourists ten at a go supposedly cycling on a party bus type thing, with blaring music, disco lights and lots of booze. Sadly the pandemic put the party on hold, but they are now very much back in business.

What is Bar Cycle?

The concept is fairly simple, with the name being a play on bicycle – you get it? Bar Cycle. What it is is essentially a motorbike hauling behind it a bar with seating for 10 people, a bar + bartender and pedals.

Now if you’re put off by the whole cycling part then do not worry the pedals are merely for show, although when you see the vehicle motoring through town it genuinely does like the tourist are peddling while boozing.

And this is pretty much the idea in a nutshell, drinking, peddling listening to music and really standing out from the crowd! As you pass through Pub Street and the like people shout, say hello and genuinely seem both equally bemused and amused at the wonderful sight.

What’s the Bar Cycle story?

Founded by foodie expert and all round funster Ducky, the vehicle which is called “Miss Daisy” first started ferrying punters around in February of 2019 and things went gangbusters until, well March 2020 when Miss Daisy went off-road.

This all changed in March 2022 though as the country hit the “new normal”, with Miss Daisy getting revamped, repainted and well ready to go.

Obviously the new normal is not yet the old normal, so she’s not out and about as much as she’d like, but does go out on special request, for charter and on dedicated nights from various hotels and hostels, such as the iconic Star Bar.

You can read about Star Bar here.

And just why is Miss Daisy so iconic?

According to Ducky “Customers who love her vary from tourist looking for a fun and novel way to see Siem Reap to locals and expats looking to book for special occasions, such as birthdays, or farewells and the like”.

And if our night was anything to go by Ducky was bang on the money, quite literally with the trip not only being a whole heap of fun, but also really good value.

A seat on the Vengabus costs just 5 bucks, inclusive of one drink, with beers then costing a dollar a piece after, or mixed drinks $2.50, with Ducky sure having a heavy handed pour!

So while Bar Cycle might not be something you’d want to do every night, the vibe, ambience and sheer fun that it is makes it a welcome change from simply sitting around in a bar.
