Phnom Penh Curfew is over – with conditions

The Phnom Penh curfew is over! The 21 day mammoth affair initially had us shut indoors from 21:00 – 03:00, with party people later being given an extra hour (extending curfew until 10pm). According to an announcement by the PM, the curfew is now over, mostly.

Why is the Phnom Penh curfew over?

As reported by the PM’s office and numerous local news outlets, the 21-day program has been successful at curbing the spread of the virus, particularly the dreaded “Delta” variant.

During this time Phnom Penh was also crowned “the most vaccinated capital in the world”. We do not know if this is true or not, as it is a difficult statistic to verify.

You can see global vaccination rates via the Our World in Data site here.

So, while we can stay out all night should we wish, can we now drink and party like it’s 1999? Yes and no, there are definite caveats to the new ruling.

Is the alcohol ban in Phnom Penh over?

We know you read curfew ban and clicked because you wanted an answer to the elephant in the room, has the alcohol ban been lifted?

This part is a little ambiguous and signs in places like Kiwi Mart still state the alcohol ban will continue until August 26th, although how things will be interpreted is anyone’s guess.

What can’t we still do in Phnom Penh?

All high-risk businesses are still to stay closed, such as massage parlours and the like and gatherings of more than 15 people are still banned. Wearing of masks, social distancing and other now accepted norms are to remain in place, so whilst there is more normality, usual vigilance is to remain in place.

So, we might not be back to normal yet, but Khmer Nights can confirm that Phnom Penh nights are back.
