Zabolicious: Handmade Treats with a Heart in Cambodia

“My roots are in Germany, and Christmas baking is an eventful occasion for the whole family, from the children to the grandparents,” says Julia, the passionate baker behind Zabolicious, an online bakery in Phnom Penh. Baking has been a part of her life since childhood, igniting a love for creating and designing sweet treats that continues to inspire her work today.

While her weekends in Germany were spent baking for family and friends, her career as a human resources manager kept her creativity confined to personal time. “For me, it’s important to maintain old family traditions and at the same time create something unique with my own ideas,” she explains. Over time, requests from friends and neighbors grew, and Julia realized that baking was more than just a hobby—it was a calling.

Her love for Asia drew her to Cambodia two years ago, where she decided to transform her passion into a full-fledged business. “While emigrating to Cambodia, I decided to pursue my passion professionally and started my own small online bakery in Phnom Penh, called Zabolicious.”

Building a Business with Love

Every creation at Zabolicious is infused with Julia’s personal touch, and her dedication to her craft shines through in every detail. “It is very important to me to maintain personal contact with all my customers, and I try to realize their wishes. All customers can expect reliable communication during the ordering procedure, delivery on time, and high-quality ingredients in my products,” she says.

Her commitment goes beyond taste. “There is more than just good taste behind every single piece…there are many thoughts and ideas that are planned in advance down to the smallest detail, many attempts to achieve the perfect recipe, and above all, all the love and passion of the baker.”

Why Cambodia and Why Now?

Julia’s connection to Cambodia goes deeper than her business. “The locals inspire me so much with their warmth and cordiality. Cambodia is already my second home,” she shares. With her business growing steadily, she’s now expanding her offerings to include workshops for children and adults.

“The first workshops are already being planned, and so the first cookie-decorating courses will take place in Siem Reap in the next few days and weeks,” Julia announces. These workshops are designed to create joy and connection through baking. “Being creative together, learning new skills, and spending time together with joy and fun is what makes us happy.”

Highlights and the Road Ahead

Julia thrives on feedback from her customers, drawing energy and inspiration from their satisfaction. “I am especially happy when the customer is satisfied and when they liked it. I am so grateful for all the lovely feedback I have received about my baked goods so far.”

She’s also embracing new challenges, such as experimenting with vegan recipes. “I am currently trying out vegan recipes and would like to thank my dear vegan customers for their great ideas, support, and criticism,” she says.

Looking ahead, Julia hopes to continue growing her small business while staying true to her values. “It’s so important to support small businesses and to support each other. Together we can achieve so much more.”

Julia’s handmade approach and dedication to quality set her apart. Every cake, dessert, and cookie is carefully crafted, balancing sweetness with lightness. “The most important ingredients are my passion and love,” she says.
