Yui’s Authentic Thai Food at Electric Kitchen

Never one to turn down the opportunity for a good meal, I jumped at the chance to try Electric Kitchen’s Monday night menu of Thai dishes, a change from my usual go to at EK, their famous French Taco.

Covid and the “pop-up” kitchen

Covid has not been a fun ride for any of us, particularly those in the food and beverage industry. It has though led to restaurants diving into innovation. Hence EK’s winning roll of the dice on French Tacos.

A significant innovation on the F&B scene has been chefs coming into a restaurant on a day it is usually closed to essentially rebrand it for a night. This is how Yui ended up at Electric Kitchen.

Yui, a Thai national who hails from near the border with Poipet found herself back in Cambodia with English partner Gary, with both finding themselves at a Covid lack of something better to do. Already being regulars at Electric Kitchen, they sparked on an idea to transform EK’s staying dark on Monday’s to a Thai day. And so far? All good.

Monday Thai Food at Electric Kitchen

There’s obviously a fair bit of choice when it comes to Thai food in Phnom Penh, Yui’s are not expecting to take over the scene entirely on the strength of one night a week. Instead they aim to carve out a niche, based around a small, but extremely well done menu. Quality over quantity as it were.

Therefore the menu itself consists of only a few dishes. These include with classics such as Pad Thai and Green Curry but also more interesting fare such as Panang Beef Curry.

We opted for the beef curry and the Pad Thai on our visit. The Pad Thai was more than satisfying enough but the Panang Beef Curry was really special. The beef came out slightly on the rare side (as was my preference), with co-owner Gary explaining that as opposed to many restaurants they add their meat just that bit later, so that it comes out tasting like meat rather than rubber. OK I might be paraphrasing with the rubber part, but it does avoid the overcooked meat deal that occurs in a lot of Khmer cooked Thai food.

Overall, a top notch meal and not a bad way to spend a quiet Monday night in Bassac Lane! As for the future? Currently you can only get Yui’s on a Monday, but they are planning to eventually move into the delivery app universe and be able to serve food from their home kitchen seven days a week, another interesting pandemic driven F&B innovation.

And Electric Kitchen now has a pool table!

Let’s not ignore that Electric Kitchen is a great place for drinks, being situated right at the heart of all Bassac has to offer. Drinks are cheap, the managers always make sure there is a good atmosphere and now they have a pool table on the second floor.

I made sure to test myself on said table and can confirm its quality, and also that I won the match.

So Yui’s Authentic Thai Food might not revolutionise the Phnom Penh Thai cuisine scene, but it delivers what it promises. Authentic food, well priced at a great location. It is indeed a solid, new option for quiet Monday nights in Phnom Penh.
