Will the Phnom Penh alcohol ban end tomorrow?

In case you missed the memo, there is still an alcochol ban in Phnom Penh. With all the frivolity surrounding the end of the curfew last week, many people, including us, thought that might mean life getting back to normal. But things are hardly normal.

What the end of curfew meant was that we were allowed to be out after 10pm, but the alcohol ban officially ends tomorrow, August 26th.

There’s still an alcohol ban?

Having been many times to Kiwi Mart in the intervening period between end of curfew and now I can confirm with a sad face that I have been unable to purchase Soju. The signs are still up and the staff are taking it seriously.

We are obviously not suggesting that no one in Phnom Penh has been bold enough to procure or serve booze during this period, we are merely stating the official line on things.

The ban on other “risky businesses” continues

Restaurants that serve food (the very definition of a restaurant) are allowed to open with social distancing, while bars are officially not allowed to open. Whether you agree with this or not, the last few days have seen a heavy presence of police in places like Riverside and Street 172.

Like it, or not you cannot yet partly like its New Year in our favorite watering holes, or at least not yet.

The alcohol ban ends the 26th of August though right?

The alcohol ban officially ends tomorrow on August 26th, although it could and may well be extended. If it does end it will mean being able to buy drinks from the local mart, do a regular shop at AEON, and drink at restaurants.

Whether things move to “normal” though is yet to be seen.
