Founded by a close-knit team of five friends united under the YEP Academy, Tonle Camp stands out as a testament to collaboration, community empowerment, and environmental stewardship.

Empowering Communities, Fostering Sustainability

Tonle Camp’s genesis sprouted in the worst times, during the COVID-19 pandemic. But, and it’s a big but, they had a vision to support local communities and promote sustainable tourism.

The team’s diverse skill set, ranging from travel agency expertise to media proficiency and teaching, converged to create an initiative focused on training local guides and enhancing logistics in Mechrey village. Witnessing firsthand the challenges faced by villagers like Samnang, a local fisherman and ranger, the team resolved to leverage their skills for positive change.

“Our commitment is evident as we continuously dedicate ourselves to this project, independent of any financial gain, while maintaining our full-time jobs,” says Sophanut, one of the founding members.

The dream for Tonle Camp extends beyond tourism—it envisions a future where village communities thrive through diversified economic opportunities and environmental education. Plans include establishing a community library to facilitate learning and innovation in agro-tourism and farming, thereby minimizing environmental impact and fostering long-term sustainability.

Immersive Experiences, Meaningful Connections

Tonle Camp is unique in its commitment to creating authentic, immersive experiences that transcend typical tourism. Exploring Tonle Sap’s ever-changing ecosystem offers a profound understanding of Cambodian village life. From fishing expeditions to kayaking adventures, bird spotting to cooking with locally-sourced ingredients, guests are invited to engage with the culture and traditions of Mechrey village in meaningful ways.

“Our service transcends mere travel; it’s an immersive experience that invites guests to actively engage with the local culture,” explains Pisey, another member of the team. By participating in these activities, visitors not only gain a deeper appreciation for Cambodian life but also contribute directly to the community’s well-being.

A Model for Sustainable Tourism

Tonle Camp’s impact extends beyond individual experiences—it represents a paradigm shift in the tourism industry. By empowering local communities and promoting sustainable practices, Tonle Camp sets a precedent for responsible tourism in Cambodia.

“Our business model is designed to revolutionize the tourism industry by transforming the community and village experience,” says Seiha, a high school teacher and member of the team. Through authentic, impactful interactions, Tonle Camp enriches Cambodia’s cultural tapestry while providing supplementary income to support local livelihoods.

Embracing the Cambodian Spirit

Beyond its natural beauty and cultural heritage, Cambodia’s true essence lies in the resilience and warmth of its people.

“The essence of Cambodia lies not just in its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes but also in the integrity, honesty, and passion of its people,” reflects Sam, a member of the team.

It’s this human touch that makes Cambodia an inviting place to live, work, and set up businesses like Tonle Camp.

In every adventure with Tonle Camp, guests not only explore the depths of Cambodia’s natural wonders but also discover the profound spirit of community, sustainability, and hospitality that define the Cambodian experience. As the sun sets over the tranquil waters of Tonle Sap, it illuminates not just a landscape, but a vision of hope, empowerment, and harmony with nature—an adventure worth embarking on, again and again.
