Unveiling a New Chapter for Cambodian Digital Arts: The Phnom Penh Creatives Meetup

A groundbreaking event, dubbed the “Phnom Penh Creatives Meetup,” has shown promise to usher in a new era for Cambodia’s digital arts scene. The brainchild of Confluences and PIXEL Digiart, two entities at the forefront of digital innovation, the event was held at the chic Seekers Spirits Independent and welcomed a diverse group of around 100 visionaries from the creative sectors.

This rendezvous wasn’t just about networking; it was a platform to foster a deeper comprehension of digital evolution and to knit a tighter community of creatives across disciplines. Marking a significant milestone, the event celebrated the alliance between Confluences and PIXEL Digiart (formerly known as Erai Pixel), aimed at introducing trailblazing digital solutions to the Cambodian market.

Attendees were treated to a showcase of leading firms specializing in digital arts services, including PIXEL Digiart and ‘Moustache Production’. The latter stands out for its mission to bridge Southeast Asian animation studios with a global network of over 700 partners, encompassing 2D, 3D, gaming, and VFX industries. Aymeric Pons, the mind behind both PIXEL Digiart and Moustache Production, expressed an eagerness to collaborate with Cambodian creatives, highlighting the potential for local talent to make their mark on the international stage.

Matthieu Petit, an account manager at PIXEL Digiart, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of embracing software advancements as digitalization strides forward.

Spotlight on Cambodian Animation Excellence

The event shone a light on two pioneering animation studios: Phare Creative Studio and Lizard Animation. Phare Creative Studio, nestled in Battambang province, is acclaimed not only for its artistic endeavors but also for its role in empowering economically disadvantaged youths through education in animation and graphic design. Under the aegis of the Phare Performing Social Enterprise and the Visual & Applied Art School (VAAS), the studio is a beacon of hope and opportunity.

Richard Sanviti, the development manager of Phare Creative Studio, shared insights into the burgeoning animation industry in Cambodia, stressing the studio’s focus on content that tackles social issues and fosters positive societal change. With ambitions to expand their international footprint, Phare is poised to explore new creative horizons in 3D animation, virtual reality, and video gaming.

Meanwhile, Lizard Animation, a homegrown talent since 2016, regaled attendees with tales of their collaborations across the globe and their ambitious plans for an original anime series. CEO Siem Leakheana elaborated on the studio’s evolution from storyboarding to a full-fledged animation powerhouse, soon to embark on a web animation project right in the heart of Cambodia.
