The Glasshouse Phnom Penh has arrived

Located at the heart of Treellion park, a recent addition to Phnom Penh’s collection of public spaces, lies a new and rather interesting social dining experience. Specifically the Glasshouse Phnom Penh, the sole restaurant to occupy that oasis. Khmer Nights went to the grand opening to suss it out and see whether you need to as well.

Treellion itself is much more than a “just a park”. It’s a welcome patch of greenery in the capital and features sporting facilities, including a Mini Golf course. Remember Angkor Putt? Like that.. but classier. The park itself has garnered mostly great reviews, my personal favourite being “like Alice in Wonderland on acid”.

The restaurant is set at the park’s centre , a prime location for the “feeding and watering” of those wandering Treellion’s environs. And opening night proved to be a memorable night of being not only well looked after, but also well and truly “watered and fed”.

The Glasshouse Phnom Penh Grand Opening

Being in the media garners hacks numerous invites to various “grand” openings but this one actually earned that adjective. The restaurant is generally geared to daytime eating and drinking, but the opening treated us to a Friday night of free-flow drinks, bountiful tapas and snacks and entertainment…..lots of entertainment.

Co-owner/founder Sov Men is a leading male model in the Kingdom and well acquainted with the nation’s entertainment community. He tapped his contacts and hundreds of them heeded the call and came out. And as soon as the welcome remarks were made, the entertainment began.

The evening’s amusements eschewed the “been there/done that” DJ/ live music option and kicked off with professional dancers performing waltzes and the like. A steady stream of expertly made cocktails also proved a solid choice in keeping the flock engaged. It was all a little surreal for Phnom Penh, but impressive. No expense was spared in delivering a quality experience.

The Glasshouse Phnom Penh concept

According to its management, mostly of French extraction, the branding is set for “social eatery” status, an experience that wil best blend fine food and wines with the outdoor ambience of Treellion Park.

Of course Glasshouse is far from the first restaurant in Phnom Penh to offer outdoor dining. But excluding rooftop bars and definitely anything connected to the Riverside, there are few spots that can compete with such a quaint garden setting.

During its first week of operations, a set menu is being served from 7.30 am to 2.30 pm with lunches priced at $10-13. The current plan is to reinvent the menu weekly.

But at nighttime? The Glasshouse is primed to really ramp things up. Their New Years Eve “Alfresco Party” will include in-house crafted $4 cocktails, $15 bottles of wine, $60 bottles of Champagne as well as the obligatory DJ pumping out tunes to see in the new year.

Sov Men said later in the evening to Khmer Nights, “We are trying to offer a little oasis away from the bluster of the city with our garden setting. As for being a social eatery? We aim to be much more than just a cafe, bar, or restaurant, we want to be somewhere anyone can go at any time. With our healthy food options and setting we can even offer things like yoga retreats and sporting events. We feel this makes us very different and indeed a unique social eatery”

Restaurants regularly come and go in Phnom Penh, but if opening night was anything to go by? The Glasshouse Phnom Penh may well prove to have staying power.
