Thailand re-opens “Test and Go” quarantine free travel program

Thailand is re-opening under its suspended “Test and Go” program. it was initially launched to allow travellers to visit the country without undergoing mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine upon arrival. The news comes on the heels of other destinations in Asia and SE Asia beginning to re-open. The relaunched Test and Go program will run alongside Thailands’ Phuket sandbox strategy.

The Thai government expects some 200,000 and 300,000 tourists per month under the two programs. “Test and Go” was previously suspended in December for five weeks due to caution surrounding the spread of the omicron variant.

The program has also been expanded in scope from its previous iteration. That version was limited to travellers from only 60 countries. Now all fully vaccinated travellers are eligible for the program.

The complete requirements for Thailands re-opening orogram are as follows:

  • A Covid-19 vaccination/recovery certificate issued at least 14 days before travel if you are 18 years or older
  • Those aged between 12-17 should have had at least one dose of vaccine
  • A negative RT-PCR test result taken within 72 hours of travel
  • A Covid insurance cover worth at least $50,000
  • Proof of payment for two separate nights of accommodation and RT-PCR tests
  • The download and installation of the MorChana government tracking application

Travellers must take COVID tests both on arrival and on their 5th day in the country. While waiting for the results of their PCR tests travellers are required to stay in a government-approved hotel. When both tests come back as negative, tourists are then free to explore Thailand exactly as they would have in 2019.

Thailand hopes to welcome 5 to 9 million tourists this year under the revised strategy. The number could become potentially go even higher should China relax its Zero COVID-19 policy, a far from certain development, but one that would facilitate the resumption of Chinese tourism into Thailand and elsewhere.
