Sihanoukville to host 40th ASEAN Tourism Forum
The coastal city of Sihanoukville is to host the annual ASEAN Tourism Forum from January 16th-22nd, which will include everything from meetings between government ministers, to a Travel Exchange (TRAVEX) expo.
What is the ASEAN Tourism Forum
Essentially it is a yearly jamboree, whereby tourism ministers from the 10 ASEAN countries come to chat about, well tourism, as well as being joined by friends of the Bloc such as India, South Korea, China, and Russia.
The second and most exciting part at least from a “should I bother attending”point of view” is the TRAVEX “trade fair” element. This will allegedly see up to 200 stalls, as well as more then 2000 people descend on Sihanoukville, fears over Omicron notwithstanding.
The event was first held in Malaysia in 1981 and was last held in the not-so-tourist-friendly Brunei in 2020
Alas the 2021 event was cancelled due to Coronavirus.
Can anyone attend AFT 2022?
With the vent being a massive seven days and almost as long as a Khmer wedding regular humans will not be expected to attend on every day and at every event, particularly when it comes to intergovernmental meetings.
There are though media passes available for those with credentials, meaning if you apply in time you will be able to attend the juicy parts.
For civilians the main point of interest will be the stalls at the TRAVEX part, where you will eb able to pick up brochures and maybe even plan a a holiday for 2024.
Hotel availability in Sihanoukville?
Again if you plan to come you should probably get in quick, with partner hotels such as the Prince Times Hotel reporting 100 percent occupancy. It should also therefore be assumed that even cheap hostels will be planning to jack up prices for the event.
And of course being in Sihanoukville offers a great excuse to take a few extra days and head to one of the islands like Koh Rong, which is never a bad thing.
