Its provincial capital, Sihanoukville city, serves as a bustling port and a rapidly growing urban center situated on a raised peninsula.
Originally named Kampong Som, the province was renamed in tribute to former King Norodom Sihanouk, who played a pivotal role in the establishment of Sihanoukville city.
