Pioneering Cambodia’s Green Future: Maloop Hosts First CEN Networking Night

Pioneering Cambodia’s Green Future

Cambodia’s eco-tourism sector took a significant step forward with the first-ever Cambodia Ecotourism Network (CEN) networking night, held at Maloop in Phnom Penh. The event marked a milestone in unifying and elevating Cambodia’s exciting eco-tourism sector, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders dedicated to sustainable travel, conservation, and responsible tourism.

An Evening of Inspiration

Organized by Gavin Bell, a passionate advocate for eco-tourism, with global experience working with protected areas and sustainable development, the networking night served as an informal yet impactful gathering for industry professionals.

“Cambodia has so much potential and with the welcome development of the Cambodian Tourism Board, the time is now right to come together to support the promotion of its natural heritage and opportunities for soft adventure to the world.”

“The Cambodian Ecotourism Network concept is inspired by the success of the Romanian Ecotourism Association in strengthening public and private cooperation to now position the country as a leading ecotourism destination in Europe.”

Gavin envisions the Cambodia Ecotourism Network as a collective voice for the sector, working to showcase the kingdom’s vast eco-tourism potential on a global scale.

Indeed, with plans for potential hosting by WWF Cambodia, the event was also a platform to encourage greater involvement from industry players to strengthen the network’s structure and mission.

The invitation set the tone for the evening as an opportunity to catch up with old colleagues, make new connections, and promote sustainable tourism offerings, all within the vibrant and eco-conscious atmosphere of Maloop.

Strong Support from Industry Leaders

The event’s success was made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of Vana Adventure Travel and Hanuman Travel, two well-established names in Cambodia’s responsible tourism sector. Additional support came from a lineup of committed eco-tourism advocates, including Solo Landscapes, Sam Veasna Conservation Tours, Only One Planet Cambodia, Cardamon Tented Camp, CSLEP, Millennium Destinations and Luxury Business Group.

“As the ASEAN Ecotourism Standards were recently published, Cambodia stands at the forefront of pioneering efforts to establish a new model for green, eco-friendly destinations in Southeast Asia and the Mekong region. This is an exciting opportunity for Cambodia to lead by example, showcasing sustainable and inclusive tourism experiences that foster local development while keeping the well-being of communities at the heart of the effort.”

“While conservation, education, and interpretation remain key elements for green tourism, it’s also crucial that we focus on behavioral change and adopt a holistic, pragmatic approach that aligns the needs of the environment, communities, and travelers alike.”

Their involvement highlights the growing commitment within Cambodia’s tourism industry to develop and promote sustainable travel experiences that prioritize environmental conservation and community engagement.

A Collective Vision for a Sustainable Tourism Future

A key objective of the event was to update attendees on the progress of the Cambodia Ecotourism Network and discuss ways to enhance its impact. By providing a platform for discussion and exchange, the gathering encouraged collaboration between eco-tourism operators, conservationists, and sustainable business leaders.
