Picture this! Cambodia’s largest free mural festival kicks off in the capital

The biggest art and mural festival in the Kingdom – presented by Tiger Beer – is due to kick off this weekend in Phnom Penh. It will showcase the best international and local artists as they work their magic on nine huge murals over the course of three days, with art exhibitions and family activities also on site at Factory Phnom Penh.

For the party animals amongst us looking to paint the town red, there will also be free concerts, late night music and DJ sets in the mix, courtesy of KlapYaHandz, Baramey, Compound Records and a host of other musical talent.

Event organiser Quentin Conesa said the idea behind the event was to not only have some fun, but show that Cambodia can hold big events on the same scale as other countries.

“We are super happy to work on this project. We had the chance to collaborate with a lot of different artists and so we took the opportunity to make something which has a presence on an international level.”

Conesa said that being able to make the event free is something the organisers are proud of, so there are no barriers for who can attend.

“I am so happy to be able to invite anyone. Events like this bring unity [to] every layer in society. The project is not just this party, we [also] have a follow up part of the festival in Koh Kong. We will bring art to the local people there so they can see something different and beautiful.”

Organisers say to unleash and enjoy the art and music and…bring a friend!

The festival, which starts this Friday at 5pm at the Factory – a repurposed garment factory that now hosts multiple creative events across an expanse of 3.4 hectares – will also have food stalls, two sponsored bars and a VIP section.

Conesa said events like this are important to widen the presence of art and be part of an international art movement in Cambodia.

“As well as local artists, we have artists coming from Japan, Thailand, Switzerland and other countries. This shows that Cambodia can attract people from abroad and that art can be a way to share Khmer culture internationally.”

“We also have bigger plans to spread art across Cambodia and that’s what we are working towards. So this is just the start of something much bigger,” he added.

The event will specifically focus on street art and graffiti, including signature fonts, cartoons and a huge variety of other styles. There will also be contemporary art from Cambodian artists as well as sculptures and unique pieces on show.

Conesa said the most important thing is for people to come down and have fun.

“I just want people to unleash themselves at the event, enjoy the music and the art and have a good time. Bring a friend!”

In attendance will be Montrealer-Khmer-French artist FONKi, TWOONE from Japan and many others. The event is presented by Tiger beer and produced by FONKi and FT Gallery. Event partners include the Japan Foundation Asia Center, @Jean-Baptiste Carraro and Cambodia Kilat Events Co LTD.
