Phnom Penh’s Riverside Walking Street Set to Extend to Wat Phnom
Exciting news for pedestrians and tourists in Phnom Penh! Starting January 2025, Cambodia’s capital will unveil an upgraded Riverside Walking Street.
The new pathway will not only enhance access to Wat Phnom — a historic landmark that helped give the city its name — but will also connect it to the existing walking route, which spans from the Independence Monument in BKK1 to the Vietnam War Statue, Royal Palace, and the scenic riverside, ending at the Night Market.
Now, this celebrated walk will stretch even further, creating a seamless pedestrian journey from the Night Market to Wat Phnom. Imagine strolling past Phnom Penh’s iconic sites without interrupting traffic—just you, the views, and the hum of local culture!
What’s the Plan?
The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has announced that the first phase of the Walking Street will launch at the end of January 2025. Initially, it will open exclusively on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, with the streets closed to all vehicle traffic from 6 PM to 11 PM. The upgraded path will run along the riverbank from the Cambodian Post Office to the Royal Palace and include infrastructure to ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone.
Here’s what’s in store:
- Dedicated pedestrian lanes for safe and uninterrupted walks.
- Night market-style stalls, offering local food, drinks, and crafts.
- Essential facilities like toilets and parking lots nearby.
- A traffic-free zone that encourages outdoor socializing and exploring.
Why Now?
Governor Khuong Sreng, who chaired the recent progress meeting, revealed that the pedestrian path project has been in the works since 2019 but faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With tourism now rebounding, the project has been fast-tracked to create a more tourist-friendly city.

“Phnom Penh is ready to offer visitors and locals a safer, more enjoyable way to explore its landmarks,” Governor Khuong said. The move aligns with the Royal Government’s strategy to encourage both national and international tourism.
Residents Join the Journey
The project has been designed with input from residents, with officials from the Department of Public Works and Transport engaging with communities to share the benefits of the initiative.
Sam Piseth, Director of the Department of Public Works and Transport, highlighted that careful planning is underway to ensure smooth operations, including parking management, water and electricity infrastructure, and organized vendor setups. “This is about creating a space that everyone can enjoy while supporting local businesses,” he said.
A Game-Changer for Phnom Penh
For years, Phnom Penh’s riverside has been a magnet for activity, but its transformation into a pedestrian-friendly haven is set to elevate the city’s appeal. The expanded walking route will not only provide better access to Wat Phnom but will also integrate this beloved cultural site into what is now arguably the best city walk in Southeast Asia.

With its grand launch just weeks away, the new Riverside Walking Street promises to become a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Phnom Penh. Whether you’re a jogger, a food lover, or just someone who loves to explore, this expanded path offers something for everyone.
