Phnom Penh Photography Collective Marks First Year with Exhibition

This month, the Phnom Penh Photography Collective commemorates its first year with a special exhibition held at the historic Hiroshima House. The collective is showcasing a group exhibition titled ‘Samaki in Cambodia,’ featuring the creative works of over 60 artists from both local and international backgrounds.

The inspiration behind the exhibition’s theme, as explained by the Collective’s founder, Shunsuke Miyatake, known professionally as Take, stems from the rich and poignant history of the exhibition venue, Hiroshima House. Constructed within the precincts of Wat Ounalom in 2006 by Reverend Osamu Shibui, Hiroshima House was established to convey the harrowing experiences of the Hiroshima atomic bomb to the Cambodian people, who have themselves endured significant suffering.

Now, Hiroshima House functions as a beacon of hope and recovery, providing sanctuary to approximately 65 children from the surrounding streets, symbolizing the shared resilience and unity of Hiroshima and Cambodia.

Take shared, “The theme ‘Samaki’, which translates to unity, solidarity, and community in Khmer, was chosen to reflect the profound connection between Hiroshima and Cambodia. We encouraged every participating photographer and artist to explore and express their interpretation of ‘Samaki in Cambodia’ through their artwork.”

The exhibition presents an array of interpretations on the theme, ranging from monk processions to lively market scenes, captured by over 50 photographers and 10 artists. The artworks displayed are available for purchase, with 70% of the sales proceeds benefiting Hiroshima House.

“We are thrilled to celebrate our collective’s first anniversary with this meaningful exhibition. As a Japanese, it’s important for me to share the significant history and the beauty of Hiroshima House with the Cambodian community,” expressed Take.

The event, set to launch on February 24, is a collaboration between Hiroshima House, Hiroshima House Art Gallery Project, and is supported by Samai Rum Distillery and Humans of Cambodia, highlighting a year of artistic collaboration and cultural exchange.
