Philippines to open to tourism – what are the rules?
Travellers from any of the 157 countries previously eligible to enter visa-free into the Philippines can now visit the country as of February 10th.
Previous tourist visa durations, such as one month for Canadians, will still apply. It is expected that tourists will be able to extend their visas in the same fashion as was done before.
To enter the country, tourists must have received a vaccine approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO). That list includes China’s Sinovac, but notably not Russia’s Sputnik.
Visitors will also need to produce a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours of entry into the country. This varies from the 72 hour standard most countries now have in place.
Previously the Philippines was closed to virtually all visitors, the exceptions being returning nationals, spouses of Filipino nationals and non-national parents of Filipino citizens.
What is the Covid situation in the Philippines?
The Philippines has been one of the worst affected countries in the region and has one of the lowest vaccination rates in ASEAN. Just 54 percent of the population has been vaccinated according to Our World in Data.
The country has previously stated that it would be pressing for “herd immunity” rather than full vaccination.
How can I get to the Philippines from Cambodia and what is there to do?
Philippines Airlines (PAL) are planning their first flight on Saturday 19th February. Weekly departures will follow thereafter. Flying via either Bangkok or Singapore is the other option, with return flights in the $600+ range.
With Easter falling on April 17th, traveling to the Philippines to literally watch people get nailed to a cross instead of just settling in for Khmer New Year is an interesting option. If you have never heard of the Cutud Lenten Rites festival then check this link.
While flights may not yet be cheap and the region is still largely closed, with the reopening of the Philipines and Thailand we are indeed seeing the begining of the end of travel restrictions.
