What’s the Day of Mourning?

The day of mourning is to pay tribute to the late Samdech Krom Preah Norodom Ranariddh. A controversial figure, he was the second son of King Sihanouk, the former leader of FUNCINPEC, as well as ex co-Prime-Minister of Cambodia.

Despite at one point being a favourite to become the next King of Cambodia, his later political career involved being part of a number of unsuccessful political parties, one named after himself, before he largely disappeared from public view.

No alcohol sales on December 8th

With the history lesson taken care of, what is the deal with no alcohol sales on December 8th?

According to a press release from the Ministry of Tourism, and as reported in Cambodia News English, the three points of the ban are as follows;

  • The owners or managers of karaoke (KTV), entertainment clubs, bars, discos, and beer gardens throughout the provincial capital must suspend business activities for one day, on December 08, 2021.
  • The owner or manager of restaurants and canteen businesses must suspend the sale of alcohol.
  • The director of the Capital / Provincial Department of Tourism must disseminate and educate the owners or managers of the above tourism services business to implement the business suspension according to this circular effectively and responsibly.

It should be noted that the prohibition on alcohol sales is restricted to Phnom Penh, so if you are reading this from Kampot, or anywhere else that is not Phnom Penh for that matter, then “party on”.

What else can I do on December 8th?

If the thought of one day without alcohol is really that much of an issue then probably take the day to reflect on your life. Otherwise just stock up today, or expect the coffee mug to make a reappearance.
