Nauru Searching Cambodia For Next Guardiola!
Nauru is the last nation on earth to have never played a professional football match and the tiny pacific island has begun an audacious search for the next Pep Guardiola right here in Cambodia.
Education through football…..
Football has seen a huge spike in popularity throughout the Kingdom with over $6m reportedly invested in infrastructure, development and marketing initiatives ahead of the SEA Games back in 2023. Football is being used by top companies as a way of spending CSR money and doing good on local communities. Tech giant Smart is leading the way with a youth league held in Phnom Penh that has over 1300 kids playing every week.
Charlie Pomroy, Technical Director of Nauru Soccer, has lived in Cambodia for 12 years and has been pivotal in implementing ‘football for social impact’ programs up and down the country. In 2017 he took a group of Khmers to Gothenburg, Sweden to compete in the youth competition and in 2018 broke a world Record here in Cambodia with the most participants in a game of football (2753 players played a game lasting 5 days).
The Nauru – Cambodia Link….
Pomroy has begun the search for coaches to join him on the Nauru project. He said;
“I’ve lived and worked in Cambodia for over a decade and I know that there are a lot of talented and ambitious young people that can benefit from a project like Nauru. This isn’t just building a football team, it’s building a whole football development system and culture. The life skills and problem solving abilities that we can develop through this project are endless. I hope to continue developing young Khmers with every project I’m involved in”.
The Nauru Soccer Federation is looking for young football enthusiasts to get involved in the project and working alongside Pomroy and ex premier league striker Dave Kitson begin building a whole football culture on the pacific island. Pomroy went on to say;
“The dream would be for me to bring 4 or 5 young Khmers with me to Nauru for a life changing experience and give them the chance to work on a project that is already getting global interest”.
The Kit Launch….
Nauru have just officially launched their first ever international jersey and all proceeds from shirt sales going straight into project development. You can buy your shirt here.
Pomroy finished by saying:
“The jerseys are a piece of football history and the more we can sell the better the chance we have of developing the young Khmer coaches even further. Buying something you want that also provides opportunities for young people is win win”.
