Featured Restaurant – Mollys Sandwich Shop

Mollys Sandwich Shop probably needs little introduction for long-term residents of Phnom Penh, particular if the traffic and buzzing of the Food Panda machine was anything to go by. Google the best sandwich in Phnom Penh, or if PP has a Subway and Molly’s will invariably come up on the search.

The fact is though that technically at least Cambodia does not yet have a Subway , but Molly’s certainly ticks all the boxes if you are craving 6+ inches of goodness (more puns to follow).

Where is Molly’s Sandwich Shop

Molly’s Sandwich Shop is situated on the notoriously seedy, but not without its charms Street 172, home of Dirty Old Sailor and a bit like a knackers yard for elderly lady loving gents.

There are though a few good restaurants here, with Molly’s ironically being opposite The Vine – itself famous for selling Big Mac’s. Is there a theme here?

Who is Molly’s Sandwich Shop, or rather Molly

You have to love a restaurant where the owner is front and centre and not just a made up logo. Molly was previously a contractor for the US military all over Africa and the Middle-East. Amazingly on most US bases they have a Subway Sandwich Shop, so 4 years ago she came home to create her own version of the most well-known sandwich franchise.

In fact when Khmer Nights asked her if Molly’s, or Subways was better, she was very coy, but pointed out that her ingredients were always fresh and that whilst there was a Molly’ Sandwich Shop in Phnom Penh, there was no Subway. Molly 2 Subway 0.

And the menu?

All the major subway Sandwich groups are here, chicken, beef, Italian and a whole heap of cheeses and sauces. You can pick from the menu, or make your own sandwich. This is something you cannot do at say “The Sandwich Shop”, also on Street 172. And as she proudly states all of her ingredients, most importantly the bread is freshly made. If she runs out, she simply makes more, and this really shows in the taste.

And the taste? Is it the best sandwich in Phnom Penh

After you pick your sandwich you get the choice to have the sandwich as is, or baked to your own perfection. I personally had her crisp it to a medium level and heated just enough to melt the cheese, I was even allowed to feel the bread and decide if it was ready. I was slowly falling n love with Molly and her Sandwiches.

The sandwiches themselves were perfect and I was completely full after one sub. It was then that Molly told me her secret, “The sandwiches are actually 7 inches, not 6 and that’s what makes the difference”. Never a truer word said….

The final word from Molly’s Sandwich shop

Molly told Khmer Nights that whilst business was booming, most of her clients were using apps, which meant more extra charges and that she did not get the chance to meet her fans. So, if you want the best sandwich in Phnom Penh and to meet a real local character head to Street 172 and get the best pseudo-Subway sandwich in the Kingdom.
