Koh Ker Temple: Cambodia’s Rising Star in Tourism
Cambodia’s Koh Ker Temple has recently surged in popularity, captivating the hearts of adventurers and history aficionados alike. Last year, this hidden gem witnessed a remarkable 71.2% increase in tourist visits, a stark contrast to the 16.7% decline observed at the famed Preah Vihear Temple. According to the latest figures from the National Authority for Preah Vihear, over 200,000 visitors were enchanted by the allure of these historic sites, with Koh Ker alone attracting 105,464 tourists.
Kong Puthika, the director-general of the National Authority for Preah Vihear, attributes the shifting tourist tides to the burgeoning appeal of new Cambodian destinations. “With the opening of numerous tourist spots, particularly along the coast and in the northeast, domestic travelers are exploring beyond the traditional,” he explained. However, Preah Vihear Temple’s remote location and the scarcity of nearby accommodations have seen fewer repeat visits.
Nestled in the Kulen district of Preah Vihear province, Koh Ker Temple stands as a monumental testament to the grandeur of Cambodia’s ancient architectural prowess. Towering at 35 meters and comprising seven majestic levels, this 10th-century marvel, dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, was built during the reign of Jayavarman IV. Its recent recognition by UNESCO, being inscribed on the World Heritage List during the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on September 17, 2023, has only added to its mystique and allure.
To celebrate this prestigious accolade and to further entice visitors, Puthika revealed plans for a series of sports tourism events in Koh Ker. “We’re eager to showcase the beauty and heritage of these sites while offering unique experiences that blend adventure with cultural enrichment,” he stated. These events are poised to spotlight not only Koh Ker but also Preah Vihear Temple, another UNESCO-listed site that has stood majestically atop the Dangrek mountain range since its inscription in 2008.
As Cambodia continues to unveil its hidden treasures, the story of Koh Ker serves as a reminder of the country’s rich tapestry of history waiting to be discovered. With initiatives underway to enhance visitor experiences, these ancient sites promise to offer more than just a glimpse into Cambodia’s glorious past—they invite travelers to become part of their enduring legacy.
