Discover the Kinin Collective: A Unique Green Oasis in Phnom Penh

The Kinin Collective is more than just a restaurant and bar; it’s a creative hub that beautifully blends food, art, and sustainability. Founded in May 2018 by Kerryn, an Australian, along with Sebastiaan Roodnat from the Netherlands and Khmer duo Sopheavy Chea and Sophal Thim, the Collective was born from a shared vision of “combining multiple businesses in the one space so we could pool our talents and resources.”

The Collective originally opened with a restaurant and bar, and since then, it has expanded to include a plant and ceramics store, Dam & Dey, and an art and antique shop, Archi X Pelago. Kerryn reflects, “What brought us together is a genuine love for unpretentious yet beautiful spaces, comforting affordable food and drinks, and green spaces.”

What truly sets the Kinin Collective apart is its commitment to sustainability. “We are a green space in Phnom Penh both in our environment and our operational values,” Kerryn explains. Guests can enjoy sitting under trees to escape the heat, knowing they are supporting a restaurant striving to be as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible. The team’s collaboration with eco-friendly businesses and organizations drives their mission towards a zero-waste future.

While Kerryn is proud of the space and the menu, she emphasizes the heart of the Collective: “If you ask any of our regular customers what they like best about our space, the answer is always our staff. We love our team, and I think it shows. We also like to have a good time when we are working and hope our customers appreciate our relaxed and fun environment.”

The Kinin Collective also has a significant impact on the community. They have an ongoing partnership with the Cambodian Children’s Fund, actively fundraising to improve the lives of local children in need. Kerryn highlights their role in local sustainability efforts: “We are also part of glass recycling and composting initiatives which serve our sustainability goals and also offer our neighbors the opportunity to recycle glass that might otherwise end up in landfills.”

For Kerryn, living in Cambodia has been a serendipitous journey. “I didn’t actively seek to open a business here in Cambodia but have been fortunate enough to meet some incredible people who allowed me to join in their project.” She cherishes her neighborhood, Toul Tom Poung Muoy, where Kinin is located, describing it as “a little community of foreigners and locals.” The connections she’s made, from sharing jokes with local tuk-tuk drivers to exchanging smiles with neighbors, remind her of a sense of community that she feels has been lost in places like her native Melbourne.

The Kinin Collective invites you to experience its unique blend of sustainability, art, and community spirit. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, you’ll find a welcoming oasis in Phnom Penh, where you can enjoy delicious food, discover local art, and connect with a vibrant community dedicated to making a positive impact. Come and see for yourself why Kinin Collective is a must-visit destination in Cambodia!
