Kandal Province, derived from the Khmer word “Kândal” meaning “Middle,” is situated in the southeastern region of Cambodia. Encompassing the entirety of Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, it shares borders with Kampong Speu and Takéo to the west, Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Cham to the north, and Prey Veng to the east. To the south, it shares an international border with Vietnam, specifically An Giang and Đồng Tháp provinces. As the second most populous province in Cambodia, it is a pivotal economic hub, second only to Phnom Penh itself. The provincial capital and largest city, Ta Khmau, lies approximately eight kilometers south of central Phnom Penh, making it a vital part of the greater Phnom Penh Metropolitan Area.
As of 2010, Kampot Province had a population of 627,884 inhabitants. It comprises eight districts, further divided into 92 communes and a total of 477 villages, with Touk Meas City situated within its boundaries.
