Kampot Province, derived from the Khmer word “កំពត” meaning “The Kampot’s Fish,” is situated in the southwestern region of Cambodia. It shares borders with Koh Kong and Kampong Speu to the north, Takéo to the east, Kep and Vietnam’s Kiên Giang province to the south, and Sihanoukville to the west. Along its southern edge, the province boasts approximately 45 kilometers of coastline along the Gulf of Thailand. Known for its fertile lowlands and abundant natural resources, Kampot Province’s administrative center is the city of Kampot.
As of 2010, Kampot Province had a population of 627,884 inhabitants. It comprises eight districts, further divided into 92 communes and a total of 477 villages, with Touk Meas City situated within its boundaries.
Historical Background
During the 19th century under the French Indochina period, Kampot evolved into a significant regional administrative hub, attaining the status of a state border district through the delimitation of the Kingdom of Cambodia. The Circonscription Résidentielle de Kampot encompassed the arrondissements of Kampot, Kompong-Som, Trang, and Kong-Pisey. At this time, Kampot boasted a diverse population, including Cambodian, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Malay communities, reflecting its vibrant multiculturalism.
Khmer Rouge Era
Tragically, during the Khmer Rouge regime, Kampot Province witnessed widespread devastation and atrocities as the Cambodian genocide swept across the region. Under the terror of Khmer Rouge rule, the province experienced mass murder and destruction, with an estimated 90,450 individuals massacred. Notably, Ta Mok, a prominent Khmer Rouge leader, orchestrated the massacre of 30,000 people in the Angkor Chey District of Kampot.
