Jungle Glamping with Gibbons at Veun Sai Siem Pang National Park

Tourists visiting Cambodia will soon be able to enjoy Jungle Glamping with Gibbons at Veun Sai Siem Pang’ National Park in Stung Treng Province, according to a press release from Asia-Pacific Field Division, who are setting up the retreat.

According to the release tourists will soon be able to “enjoy the once in a lifetime experience of seeing rare, wild gibbons – then retire to their ‘glamping’ accommodation”

What exactly is Glamping?

Glamping is a relatively new phenomenon, with the world being a portmanteau of  glamour and camping. Essentially it is like camping, but you do not have to pitch a tent and have the relative luxuries of a bed, electricity and other creature comforts that do not come fromregular camping.

They further added that the retreat holds two tidy stylish safari style tents, each with a private deck and bathroom, as well as a dining space constructed from upcycled timber – indeed luxurious camping.

Glamping itself whilst not exactly new to the world has yet to take hold in Cambodia, but according to Emmeline Johansen Communications Director at Asia-Pacific Field Division would attract high-end visitors wishing to sample jungle life, see the gibbons, but also have a little bit of luxury, telling Khmer Nights;

“The tourists who choose this tour itinerary are mostly high-end, who prefer to stay in luxurious accommodation”

The release further added that the already established gibbon ecotourism project had invested in the glamping retreat in order to offer something slightly more unique for travelers to the Kingdom.

They did though further add that for those on a restricted budget, regular camping would also be allowed in the reserve.

The national park is also famously home to some of the most stunning natural scenery in the Kingdom, with guests able to explore the forests at their own leisure, as well as swim in waterfalls among other activities only the countryside can offer.

As to why they picked this specific area Emmeline Johansen added “The habitats there unique, it has evergreen forests, grasslands, and deciduous forests. It provide a huge wildlife habitats including one of the most stunning and colourful primates in the world, the red-shanked douc”

The gibbons are the star of the show, however. The primate group represents the largest known population of the northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbon on Earth and was recognized as a new species by researchers in 2010 and is classed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List.

Aside from nature and its primates the area is also home to a number of indigenous ethnic groups, who in partnership with the ecotourism project will offer guests the opportunity to experience their culture and way of life.

Who is behind the jungle Glamping with Gibbons at Veun Sai Siem Pang National Park project?

The ecotourism project is governed by the Community Based Ecotourism Group (CBET), with help and support from local communities and the Ministry of Environment (MOE). Conservation International will also provide technical support to the project with funding support from IUCN, Save Our Species (SOS) and the Arcus Foundation.

It is hoped that the boost to the local economy will also encourage the local people to embrace conservation and ecotourism, with Naven Hon of Conservation International stating ‘Ecotourism, done right, is a “win-win”.
