It means that you have been vaccinated in Cambodia and for some establishments is now a prerequisite even for entry, as well as to be able to travel or do certain jobs. What it is not is a card that will allow you to travel internationally. Whilst the card does have a QR code on it, it is also literally made of light plastic and written on with a felt-tip pen.

You can though now go to Raffles Hospital and arrange for a 6-page printed booklet for $40, although you will have to print the booklet yourself – a story for another time.

Said booklet more resembles a vaccination certificate that you would receive for say Yellow Fever, or Measles and is signed by a doctor stating your vaccination status. This will theoretically aid you better than your vaccination card, although there is still no international standard on this. No two places are the same and it is imperative to do your own research before deciding to up sticks and leave Cambodia.

Another essential point here is whether a country recognizes the vaccine you have received. Most of us in Cambodia have received Sinovac. Although it’s approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), it still has not been recognized by a number of countries. Canada recently announced that they would allow vaccinated travelers from October, but it specifically does not include any Chinese vaccine. It should it also be noted that Sinovac and Sinopharm are not the same, with some countries, such as Cyprus recognising the latter rather than the former.

Most EU states also do not recognize Chinese vaccines. This situation may well change, but as of now this is the status quo.

What is the process of leaving Cambodia?

That has essentially not changed regardless of your vaccine situation. It involves getting a $130 Covid-19 test, that ideally comes back negative, and the provision that you are flying to a country that will allow you to enter.

Can I return to Cambodia without quarantine if I have been vaccinated?

As things currently stand your vaccination status does not mean you get to skip quarantine. There were rumours of this changing in some way shape or form for residents from August, although this has not come to pass, yet.

Although even if this does become a policy whether some form of quarantine, or negative PCR test prior to departure, or arrival is also as of yet unknown.

What does vaccinated in Cambodia mean then?

At the moment it means very little for travel, but in the long term you will need to be vaccinated if you want to go to any other country – this we know. In the short term whilst it does not help you begin globetrotting again, it does mean you are doing your part to halt the spread of the virus in the country, the main reason why everyone could and should get the jab.
