Kampong Chhnang FC 1 Koh Kong FC 9 – it might be a nine hour drive to Phnom Penh from Koh Kong, but when you deal a spanking like this sleeping on a bus seems very much worth it.

What was the match all about?
The match was part of the regional quarter-finals of the Hun Sen Cup, the major knock-out competition of Cambodia, analogous to the FA Cup in England. The teams that do best not only get a chance to face the top sides in Cambodia, but also get promoted to the C-League 1 – the highest level of football within the Kingdom.

Kampong Chhnang FC 1 Koh Kong FC 9
It is always nice to enter a game not knowing who the stronger team is. It is even more exciting to enter a game at a neutral stadium, in this case the RCAF Old Stadium, home of Tiffy Army – we will deal with the stadium later.
Pretty much as soon as the match started it was clear there really was only one team involved in the match and it took only 12 minutes for Koh Kong to score, with the opening goal coming from number 99 Vichy Pov, who would manage a hat-trick before eventually being substituted. Goals were then added on the 25h, 33rd and 43 minutes, many of which were stunners, leaving us at four zip going into the break.
The second half pretty mucn continued in a similar vein, with goals in the 51st, 57th, and 68th minute, before Kampong Chhnang FC managed to pull back a consolation goal. Alas the comeback was short-lived with Koh Kong scoring in the 72nd, 79th and 84th minute – leaving us at Kampong Chhnang FC 1 Koh Kong FC 9.
Kampong Chhnang FC 1 Koh Kong FC 9 – What does it mean?
It means that Koh Kong FC are not only looking pretty bad ass, but are also through to the regional Semi-Finals there they will play Bonteay Meanchey FC, who beat Siem Reap FC by a single goal.
You’d also have to fancy Koh Kong FC for promotion, something extra impressive when you consider they play their home games at a high school. This might also mean they have something else to talk about aside from new airports and their rather wonderful sausages.
Kampong Chhnang FC return to Kampong Chhnang with their tails between their legs, still there’s always next year.
The RCAF Old Stadium
Home of Tiffy Army and so called because it is old, very old. The seats were perhaps placed there during communist times, but they did have a part selling food, or at least cold drinks and boiled eggs. A definite highlight for my stadiums of Cambodia series.
