Gold Rush for Cambodia: Para Throwball Triumph and the Rise of Inclusive Sports

There was something special in the air at the Techo Sen National Centre of Disabled Persons in Phnom Penh this past weekend. Flags waved, crowds cheered, and history was made—twice—when Cambodia’s men’s and women’s para-throwball teams clinched gold medals at the inaugural Asian Para Throwball Championship.

Held from March 28–29, this first-of-its-kind event in Asia welcomed competitors from six nations. But it was Team Cambodia who truly stole the spotlight. The men’s team triumphed over powerhouses like Sri Lanka and India, while the women’s team dominated the court to edge out Thailand and India for gold.

Two months of training. Two gold medals. Talk about heart, hustle, and homegrown talent.

Cambodia’s Sporting Spirit

“This win shows the world what Cambodia is capable of,” said Yi Veasna, Secretary-General of the National Paralympic Committee of Cambodia (NPCC), who proudly praised the athletes’ dedication. “Our athletes have proven that with determination and teamwork, anything is possible.”

It wasn’t just about the medals. It was a celebration of resilience, inclusivity, and the rising strength of adaptive sports in Cambodia. The World Para Throwball Federation applauded Cambodia’s effort in hosting such a seamless and spirited tournament, planting the seeds for a bright future in para sports across the region.
