Featured Restaurant – Star Bar Siem Reap

We realize we can get a bit Phnom Penh centric at Khmer Nights, so today our featured restaurant is Star Bar Siem Reap. Remember Siem Reap? The place that used to be really cool, but now looks more like Beirut circa 1985, yep that Siem Reap.

Things have been tough in Siem Reap with many of the great bars and restaurants falling by the wayside as the tourists disappeared. This has led to a bit of a survival of the fittest, with Star Bar proving fitter than most.

Where is Star Bar Siem Reap?

It is located on the other side of the river within walking distance of the old Hard Rock Cafe, remember those guys? This means they are within 5-10 minutes walk of Pub Street, which would be useful if Pub Street were open.

Amazingly Cozy Bar is still open, but one gets the impression that after a nuclear war there would be just cockroaches and Cozy Bar still left in the post apocalyptic world. You can read about this fine establishment here

To get here by TukTuk you literally just need to type in Star Bar, but if you do need an address it is;

0396 Wat Damnak Rambutan Lane Siem Reap, 17254

What’s the Star Bar Story?

They initially opened as a bar, restaurant and hotel in March of 2019. From here they quickly became a favourite of the locals with the big screen for sports and quizzes (more on that later), great food, clean swimming pool and fabulous happy hour deals all lending a helping hand.

Thing’s have changed a bit since their heyday and the mass exodus of people from Siem Reap, but they are good enough that the loyal clientele of locals have allowed them to if not thrive at least survive.

The Star Bar Siem Reap Menu

Classic western fare with some decent locals dishes thrown in for good measure. Their burgers are particularly good, as are the all you can eat wings. They also serve proper chips, not girly french fries

The pizza is also of a decent standard and can be won as a prize at one of their quite legendary pub quizzes – which is probably what makes them one of the best bars still standing in Siem Reap.

Word on the street is they also have the best 25 cent buffalo wings in Siem Reap, but we are yet to put the peddle to the metal on this.

The Best Pub Quiz in Siem Reap and other events

One of the standout things for Star Bar is that form Tuesday to Sunday (they close on Monday) they usually have a decent line-up of events. These have obviously reduced a bit as Siem Reap has entered lockdown, but for old patrons things like the pressure hour, the meat raffle, karaoke and pub quizzes we’re what kept us coming back for more.

The current quiz is held every Sunday night and involves six rounds arranged via the HUGE screen by the enigmatic American owner Tim Scott. There is lots of interaction, a fair bit of banter and the top 3 teams get a prize, specifically two pitchers of beer, one pitcher, or a big bowl of popcorn for 3rd place. Not bad odds when there are 4 teams participating, although this varies from week to week.

And they have a great pool

Since Covid-19 started I have booked many a hotel for the simple reason that it has a pool. On arrival I have often been presented with what is more like a pond. Star Bar Siem Reap actually make the effort to not only maintain their pool, but more importantly keep it in top shape. They are also not Niazi’s about who can use the pool, with paying punters welcome for a dip.

Siem Reap is down in the dumps right now and there might not be many reasons to come here, but she will be back one day and better than ever. When that happens Star Bar will be there to greet you.
