With lots of energy and a goal in the dying minutes Svay Rieng FC 1 Phnom Penh Crown 0 offered a lot more than the score suggests. With phase 2 of the metfone C-League creating a promotion and a relegation group, we were promised more exciting games with more to play for. If this was anything to go by they might be onto something.

First half  – Svay Ring FC 0 Phnom Penh Crown 0

The match was played out in the boonies of Svay Rieng, or to give them their full name – Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC, I will not be typing that every time. Going into the match Phnom Penh Crown were top, level on points with Visakha FC. Quite simply a win would have them in pole position.

The first half was indeed action packed, Phnom Peng Crown were probably slightly the better team, but try as they might neither team could score. The half ended goalless, but with the distinct impression there would be drama of some kind in the second half.

Second half – Svay Rieng FC 1 Phnom Penh Crown 0

Phnom Penh Crown started the second half in a strong position, but as the game wore on so did their frustration, which was very evident from the bench every time a decision went against them. The visitors though remained the better team coming close on a number of occasions before it all went terribly wrong. With two minutes stoppage time announced Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC went on the counter-attack and Cameroonian forward Emmanuel, by far the home teams best player on the night slotted the ball home easily to give Svay Rieng the victory in the dying seconds.

What does it mean?

Going into the match Phnom Penh Crown were top of the table and with Visakha having lost could have cemented their position at the top. For  Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC this was 6 pointer and they now find themselves joint top of the table, alongside Visakha, Nagaworld and Phnom Penh Crown.

Svay Ring Stadium

Considering this is provincial club from a small border town the stadium is extremely impressive. There is one full stand, a second stand behind one of the goals and a large area for standing spectators, giving an official capacity of 3,000, of course Covid-19  notwithstanding.

As for Svay Rieng itself, a very pleasant, but sleepy town, certainly not the kind of place you can imagine marquee foreign players partying in. One can only assume there are frequent visits to Phnom Penh.
