Pedal Through History: Exploring the Bicycle Bridge of Takeo Temple

In an effort to provide a more eco-friendly and enjoyable experience for tourists exploring the Angkor site, the APSARA National Authority has recently unveiled a new addition: the Bicycle Bridge of Takeo Temple. This innovative infrastructure project aims to enhance the cycling experience while preserving the natural beauty of the surrounding area.

Sok Soseila, Deputy Director of the Department of Water, Forestry, and Infrastructure Management at APSARA, highlighted the authority’s commitment to promoting cycling tourism within the Angkor site. “We began constructing bicycle tracks in 2020 to cater to tourists who prefer exploring on two wheels,” he explained. These tracks, spanning over 23 kilometers in total, feature four purpose-built bridges, including the newly inaugurated Takeo Temple Bicycle Bridge.

Spanning 65 meters in length and 2.5 meters in width, the Takeo Temple Bicycle Bridge provides cyclists with a dedicated pathway separate from regular vehicular traffic. This initiative not only enhances safety for cyclists but also reduces congestion and minimizes the environmental impact of motor vehicles near the ancient temples.

Make a day of it!

In addition to the Takeo Temple Bridge, three other bicycle bridges—Angkor, Kraing Krouch, and Neak Poan—have been constructed, along with smaller bridges across key locations such as the Yosothor moat and the former Neak Poan water gate. Each bridge is thoughtfully designed to blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings, reflecting APSARA’s commitment to balancing conservation with development.

Encouraging tourists to embrace cycling as a means of exploring the Angkor area, Soseila emphasized the benefits of this sustainable mode of transportation. “Cycling allows visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of the surrounding nature while minimizing their carbon footprint,” he remarked.

Explore hidden adventures

In addition to the Bicycle Bridge of Takeo Temple, Cambodia offers a wealth of lesser-known adventures waiting to be discovered. In the surrounding area of Siem Reap, adventurers can explore the tranquil countryside on horseback or embark on a kayaking adventure along the picturesque Tonle Sap Lake. For those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path experience, Cambodia’s southern coast boasts hidden gems such as the pristine beaches of Koh Rong and the charming colonial architecture of Kampot.

In the broader scope of Cambodia, travelers can venture to the remote northeastern province of Ratanakiri to discover the enchanting beauty of Yeak Laom Lake and the indigenous communities that call this region home. Meanwhile, the rugged landscapes of Mondulkiri offer opportunities for trekking through lush forests and encountering majestic wildlife, including elephants and gibbons.

Whether exploring the ancient wonders of Angkor or venturing off the beaten path to discover Cambodia’s hidden treasures, the kingdom offers a myriad of unforgettable experiences for adventurous souls.
