Eco-Living in Cambodia

Eco-living

Can you practice eco-living in Cambodia? Going green, going eco has been the trend in recent years, and especially with covid, the need to live sustainably has been re-emphasised. Eco has also been used as a marketing buzzword and going eco is a trend. But what does it really mean to go green and be eco. Are you ready to live green?

The greatest cost of going eco/green is your convenience. – Hoonie Lim aka GreenieHoonie

As I embarked on this journey of being a green influencer back in 2018, using social media to spread the idea, I observed and realised that the toughest part of going eco is not just the financial cost, but the convenience that we are so used to in our lifestyle. The lifestyle of use and throw. Having been known by friends around me that I am more conscious of the environment, bringing it to the social world was a natural transition for me.

To read about Glamping with gibbons click here I would encourage most who wish to do their little bit for the environment, to start with 2 simple habits. To bring your reusable water bottle and a reusable bag (be it plastic, cloth, or any material). The point is to reduce the amount of waste and resources we use. Remember that the 3R’s is to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The first and most important R is to reduce, not recycle.

Eco-Living in Cambodia an everyday thing

Most of the plastic that was created has not been recycled. Most are still sitting around somewhere on our planet Earth, be it in the landfill, in the ocean or incinerated.

For the reusable water bottle, I will recommend a wide mouth one so that it is easier for you to wash it and keep it clean. I usually use one just for water for easier maintenance and a collapsible cup for sugared drinks.

As you can see, it’s a lifestyle change. Something so simple, yet often forgotten. Of course if you can make the conscious effort to do more, u can bring your reusable cups, bottles for sugared drinks, collapsible containers, reusable utensils, shopping bags. It is remembering to say no thank you to the plastic bags that is conveniently offered to you.

Eco-lIving in Cambodia – A lifestyle choice

When we make that conscious effort to look at the number of plastics we go through a day, u will be shocked that it can be as many as 13 of various types, shapes and sizes. For a start, try to reduce the waste that you generate. And from there, build up towards zero-waste. It is not easy and I am still far away from the zero waste goal. But if everyone makes that conscious effort to reduce 3 bags a day, it still adds up to billions of bags saved from the landfill. All we have to do is say no thank you.

Apart from plastics waste, we should also try to compost our food waste back to nutritional fertilizers for our plants. If communities have centralised waste sorting systems and if the public cooperate and sort their waste accordingly, the environment will definitely be much more pleasant. Waste has been always a big issue with growing cities and more humans, which leads to more consumption.

To live green, there are many ways and I feel that every little adjustment we adopt in our lifestyle, will be for the greater good for our planet Earth. Climate issues are a real thing and they are happening closer to us now. Let us all take responsibility and do our part for a better environment to live in.

This shall be the start of a series on  green living and eco-living in Cambodia so so stay tuned
