Discovering The Wild Rover: Phnom Penh’s New Irish Pub

Phnom Penh welcomes a fresh touch of Irish charm with the grand opening of The Wild Rover, a traditional Irish pub on Street 178, mere steps from some of the capital’s most iconic sites, including the Royal Palace, the National Museum, and the picturesque Preah Sisowath Quay.

This newest addition to Phnom Penh’s bustling social scene is more than a pub—it’s a piece of home for the city’s Irish expats and a hub of warmth and hospitality for travelers from around the globe.

The Wild Rover takes its name from a popular Irish folk song about a young man’s journey home after years of adventure.

For The Wild Rover’s owner, Alan, and its manager, Julie, both originally from County Derry, Ireland, the pub marks a new chapter. After a decade of living in Cambodia and witnessing the closure of beloved Irish establishments, Alan felt inspired to bring an authentic Irish pub back to Phnom Penh.

Opening Weekend Festivities

Kicking things off with a nod to Cambodian tradition, The Wild Rover will host a Pros Prum monk blessing ceremony at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2024. The festivities continue with a soft opening party at 5 p.m., where guests can enjoy a selection of complimentary food and drinks. As the evening unfolds, Irish musician Dan Reidy will treat attendees to an authentic Irish music set from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., transporting guests straight to the lively pubs of Ireland.

An Irish Haven in the Heart of Cambodia

Irish pubs are synonymous with camaraderie, warmth, and a sense of belonging—no matter where you are in the world. With The Wild Rover now open, it’s currently the only Irish pub in Phnom Penh, offering a slice of Ireland to those passing through the capital as well as to its local expat community. Both Alan and Julie are excited to provide an authentic pub experience with a unique Cambodian twist, creating a friendly space for Irish expats and any visitor seeking English-speaking company and lively conversation.

In the months ahead, The Wild Rover plans to roll out a hearty food menu alongside its extensive drink selection. Classics like the All-Day Irish Breakfast, Irish Stew, and Shepherd’s Pie will soon become fixtures for those looking to indulge in comforting Irish flavors.

A Warm Welcome Awaits

Alan and Julie are eager to see The Wild Rover grow into a community staple, a place where visitors and locals alike can come together, share stories, and experience a touch of Irish warmth amidst the lively, ever-changing cityscape of Phnom Penh. They look forward to welcoming everyone to their cozy corner of Phnom Penh and raising a glass to new friendships and good cheer at The Wild Rover.
