CPL 2 Round 7 Roundup

Once again a round which epitomised the differences between the level of professionalism within the league, not to mention a bottom of the table clash that gave us lots of goals and a bit of controversy.

Featured match Next Step FC 0 Saltilo FC 6

As proud sponsors of Next Step FC, this was not the result us, or them wanted. To say there is history and bad blood between the two would be doing a massive disservice, with Next Step FC coach Charlie Pomroy having previously coached Soltilo twice.

So, to the game? Soltilo took the lead through a fine free-kick within the first 5 minutes – see clip below – before adding a second mid-way through the half. At this point though the match remanned fairly even as they headed into the break 2-0 down.

Alas the start of the second-half was to prove the zenith of the match for Next Step with a goalmouth scramble that really really should have been a goal, but alas it was not to be. Had Next Step got the game to 2-1 they might have made a game of it, but it was not to be. Instead they not only had a player sent off, but went on to let in another week 4 goals.

The only highlight, at least from a home fans point of view was when the Soltilo coach was sent-off. And while their victory looks good, the team still remain near the bottom of the table, despite having a huge budget. This game certainly did nothing for their reputation for being one of the least liked teams in the division and country.

Speaking to Khmer Nights after the game Next Step coach Charlie Pomroy said “At 2-0 down I felt we could have gotten back into the match, but we need to improve our mentality. Currently it is like the team are going out expecting to lose”.

He also acknowledged that there might need to be some action during the transfer window.

The Siem Reap Stadium

As opposed to the fancy Hanuman Stadium Next Step play at the The Siem Reap Stadium, slightly out of town and known as the “Old Stadium”. The ground almost has an Angkor Wat type feel to it, with the club doing a great job of getting fans there and creating a great atmosphere.

They are also now sposnored by Young Pioneer Tours. You can pick up some Next Step swag here.

CPL 2 Round 7 – best of the rest

It was actually an extremely interesting week with regards to the promotion race, with a few top of the table clashes not going as the script predicted. EDC FC beat high flying Prey Veng 2-1 at home, Asia Euro United beat Koh Kong 2-1 away, while surprise package ISI beat National Academy 3-1 away.
