CPL 2 Clubs Complain Over Late Payments
Despite nine clubs either going bankrupt, or dropping out of the division due to financial concerns, clubs in CPL 2, also known as the Cambodian Second League are still not receiving payments for March expenses, according to club representatives.
Clubs are currently entitled to $650 for hosting home games, as well as $750 for away games, although this drops to $300 if they play a club in the same division. Amazingly this is actually a drop in money provided to clubs, despite big hitters such as EDFC and Soltilo being forced into bankruptcy.
The current CPL 2 consists of 8 clubs, down from 12 in the previous season, and with four reserve sides being required to make up the numbers. This has meant an overall contraction of professional clubs by the CPL, when compared with the old CNCC ran Metfone C-League.
What is happening with the payments?
Essentially clubs are receiving payments either late, or are not being told when they will be received, with Angkor City FC Director of Football Gareth Johnson telling us “We used the money from the first game to pay for the second game and now it seems like we will not receive payment before the Pchum Ben holidays, which will obviously affect players”.
Blade Perkins of Siem Reap FC had similar concerns telling BPVE “All we are seeking is clarification on the issue, we have expenses to pay and the subsidies from CPL were included in our budget. If these subsidies are paid late, the same as last year, it becomes financially very difficult for us. We can’t continually accept to being told to wait, wait, wait. If we had some clarification on the issue in regards to payment dates etc, it would make it much easier for us as a Football Club”
Another club official who asked not to be named stated “The CPL clearly has money, so we really don’t understand why this is happening. The top brass never go without cars and you get the impression they all get their salaries on time”.
When approached about the issue a representative from the CPL stated that clubs “needed to be patient”. One only hopes this be fixed before both patience and finances both run out”.
