Discovering Cambodia’s Craft Heritage with MANAVA
Integral in keeping the spirit of Cambodia’s artisan community alive is MANAVA, a social enterprise and conscious lifestyle brand committed to crafting exquisite basketry and fashion accessories from locally sourced rattan. The story of MANAVA began with Ka-Lai Chan, whose journey to Cambodia as a volunteer turned into a mission to empower rural artisan women.
Ka-Lai Chan’s passion for traditional crafts was ignited during a visit to the rural village of Krobey Riel, about 30 minutes from Siem Reap. There, she was captivated by the intricate weaving skills of local women who transformed natural fibers into beautiful, functional products. Despite their remarkable talents, these artisans struggled to earn enough to support their families. With her design background and a newfound admiration for Cambodian craftsmanship, Ka-Lai founded MANAVA in 2016. Her vision was clear: to share Cambodian artisanal crafts with the world while improving the lives of the artisans.
Empowering Artisans, Transforming Lives
Since its inception, MANAVA has provided fair income and meaningful employment to 25 full-time and 50 part-time artisans. This has had a profound impact, doubling their family contributions and significantly enhancing their livelihoods. MANAVA’s commitment to its artisans extends beyond fair wages; it offers high-quality training and personal development programs. Collaborating with the Women’s Resource Center NGO, MANAVA conducts life skills programs covering financial management, family planning, healthcare, domestic violence, positive parenting, women’s rights, and English language skills.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship
What sets MANAVA apart is its dedication to preserving a 1,000-year-old traditional weaving technique. The artisans create unique pattern shapes inspired by natural forms and the rich history of Cambodian art, architecture, and pottery, including the temples of Angkor Wat. Patterns like the lotus shape, fishtooth shape, chakachan, and the spine of a dragon are meticulously hand-dyed to create textures that make each product timeless and unique.
Sustainable and Ethical
MANAVA’s environmental impact is as significant as its social contributions. The enterprise uses sustainable materials such as “pdau” rattan palm and “la paek” willow grass, which are fast-growing and abundant throughout Cambodia. By carefully managing their harvests, MANAVA ensures that these resources are available for future generations, promoting a sustainable craft industry.
Connecting Cultures Through Craft
MANAVA’s name, derived from Sanskrit meaning “humankind,” embodies its mission to support female artisans and elevate Cambodia’s creative industries on the global stage. The enterprise’s efforts not only preserve an essential part of Cambodia’s cultural legacy but also provide education and empowerment to women in the community.
Looking ahead, MANAVA plans to showcase its work at the prestigious Maison et Objet Paris design fair in September. This international platform will further their mission of sharing Cambodian crafts with the world, connecting people through handcrafted stories.
Indeed, MANAVA’s products stand out not just for their beauty and craftsmanship but for the profound impact they have on the artisans’ lives. By choosing MANAVA, customers are not only acquiring unique, handcrafted accessories but also supporting a sustainable and ethical enterprise that uplifts communities and preserves cultural heritage.
In a world where every purchase can make a difference, MANAVA invites you to be part of a story that weaves together tradition, empowerment, and sustainable growth.
