Cambodia’s Bakong Tourists App Now Supports Visa Cards for Easier Payments
Tourists visiting Cambodia now have a more convenient way to make payments, thanks to the integration of Visa cards with the Bakong Tourists App. The app, developed by the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), allows visitors to link their Visa cards from their home countries and make digital payments at approximately 4.5 million merchants across the country.
This integration enables tourists to pay by scanning KHQR codes at hotels, restaurants, shops, and other businesses, eliminating the need to carry large amounts of cash. In addition to direct payments, the app allows users to transfer funds to their individual Bakong accounts, providing an alternative way to manage spending while in Cambodia.

The official launch event for the Visa integration was attended by NBC Governor Dr. Chea Serey, along with representatives from government ministries, international payment firms, and private companies. The initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance Cambodia’s digital payment infrastructure, promote financial inclusion, and encourage the use of the local currency, the Khmer Riel.
Arturo Planell, Visa’s Group Country Manager for Regional Southeast Asia, emphasized the benefits of this development, stating that it supports both tourism businesses and small enterprises by making digital transactions more accessible to international visitors.

The introduction of Visa payments through the Bakong Tourists App will significantly improve the experience of visiting Cambodia’s most popular sites. Tourists can now explore destinations like Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace, and the white sand beaches of Koh Rong without worrying about carrying cash or finding ATMs.
In Siem Reap, visitors can seamlessly pay for entrance tickets to the Angkor Archaeological Park, hire tuk-tuks for a sunrise tour, or grab a refreshing drink at one of the many cafes around Pub Street—all with a quick QR scan. In Phnom Penh, exploring the historic sites of the Royal Palace and the National Museum, booking boat cruises along the Mekong, or enjoying a night out at the city’s vibrant bars and restaurants is now easier with digital payments.
Markets across Cambodia, including the famous Phsar Thmey (Central Market) in Phnom Penh and the Night Market in Siem Reap, are known for their wide variety of handcrafted souvenirs, textiles, and street food. With KHQR payments now available through Visa, tourists can purchase locally made products with just a tap on their phone—no need to haggle over change or worry about carrying small bills.
