Cambodia to reopen in two weeks – if all goes well

Cambodia to reopen in roughly two weeks if the Covid-19 situation remains stable for 15 consecutive days, according to an announcement by Prime-Minister Hun Sen.

Speaking to the Council of Ministers he stated;

“If within the coming 10 to 15 days the situation is stable, if we can maintain transmission and death rates like we do currently, I think it’s time to reopen the economy and society in all sectors, but in the new normal by following the three dos and three don’ts,”

What are the conditions for Cambodia to reopen?

Essentially everything needs to remain stable, which means death rates and new infections remain low, with the figure being tentatively put as less than 20 deaths per day.

The decision is to be taken after the current Pchum Ben public holiday. If during this time the situation has remained stable the government will decide on reopening, with the PM adding it was the right time for the economy.

Cambodia to reopen in two weeks – what is the new normal?

As was recently announced that residents will be required to show proof of vaccination to enter schools, markets and private establishments, while norms such as face-masks and social distancing are to remain in place.

It will though, if things go well mean places such as gyms,concerts and other such joyous things as people being able to watch footbal being able to happen again. A new normal, but some normality none the less.

Will Cambodia reopen to tourism?

Last month it was announced that Cambodia had begun discussions with Chinese and Korean travel agents about a loose reopening, although with neither country exactly encouraging foreign travel, this will unlikely to be the silver bullet the tourist industry had been hoping for. .

If though the country decide to go down the route many other countries, such as India have done and fully reopen their borders, then we may well begin to see tourists back in the country, at least theoretically.
