Cambodia to Launch E-Arrival Card for Air Passengers in September 2024

Cambodia is set to introduce an e-Arrival card system for air passengers starting in September 2024, marking a significant step towards modernizing the country’s travel infrastructure. Prime Minister Hun Manet announced the initiative on Monday, August 12, stating that the new digital system will replace traditional paper forms for immigration, health, and customs declarations.

The e-Arrival card will be accessible through the official website, www.arrival.gov.kh, or via the Cambodia e-Arrival app, which will be available for download on the App Store and Play Store. This digital transformation aims to streamline the entry process for both national and international travelers, offering a more convenient and efficient experience.

Beginning September 1, 2024, the e-Arrival system will be rolled out at Cambodia’s three international airports. The General Department of Immigration emphasized that this new system will allow passengers to complete all necessary immigration formalities and health procedures in one form, simplifying the overall process.

Foreign visitors will still need to show or obtain a visa upon arrival. However, within seven days prior to their arrival, passengers are required to fill out their immigration, health, and customs declarations through the Cambodia e-Arrival app.

Thourn Sinan, chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association Cambodia chapter, expressed optimism about the new system, suggesting that the convenience and efficiency offered by the e-Arrival card could enhance Cambodia’s appeal as a tourist destination. “The e-Arrival card app could streamline the entry process for tourists, potentially attracting more visitors to Cambodia,” he said.

Tourism remains one of the key pillars of Cambodia’s economy, alongside the garment, footwear, and travel goods export industries, agriculture, and construction and real estate sectors. The Ministry of Tourism reported that Cambodia welcomed 3.16 million international tourists in the first half of 2024, a significant increase from 2.57 million in the same period last year.

Travel Tips for Tourists in Cambodia

As Cambodia continues to improve its infrastructure and travel services, here are some additional tips to help ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip:

  1. Currency: The official currency in Cambodia is the Cambodian Riel (KHR), but the US dollar is widely accepted, especially in tourist areas. It’s a good idea to carry small denominations of both currencies, as change is often given in a mix of riel and dollars.
  2. Visas: While the e-Arrival card will simplify some processes, don’t forget that you will still need a visa to enter Cambodia. You can obtain one online before your trip or upon arrival at the airport.
  3. Local Transportation: Tuk-tuks are a popular and affordable way to get around cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Make sure to agree on a fare before starting your journey. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are also available in larger cities.
  4. Safety: Cambodia is generally safe for tourists, but it’s always wise to stay alert, especially in crowded areas. Keep your belongings secure and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  5. Cultural Etiquette: When visiting temples or other religious sites, dress modestly. Cover your shoulders and knees as a sign of respect. It’s also customary to remove your shoes before entering someone’s home or a temple.

With these tips in mind, your trip to Cambodia can be both exciting and hassle-free. The launch of the e-Arrival card is just one of many steps the country is taking to enhance its appeal to international travelers.
