Cambodia Getaways – Phnom Penh to Columbo

Sri Lanka might seem Lika. Far off place from Cambodia, but getting from Phnom Penh to Columbo and indeed back again can be done relatively easy and almost over a weekend.

So, how does one get from Phnom Penh to Columbo and bacK?

Sadly as Phnom Penh is not a flight hub, yet anyways, it will involve going via Bangkok. This can be done from as little as $100 return, if you book in advance. Flight times mean that you can do it to coincide with flights, or you can just go whole hog and have a great night out in Bangkok, which tends to be our MO.

Getting there is usually Sri Lanka Airways, while coming back can be done via Air Asia. The flight back to Bangkok arrives at 4 am, which ties in great wuth the 7-9 am flights to Phnom Penh.

Or of course you can get really adventurous and take the train from Bangkok to Poipet.

How to get into Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is not a country without its problems and famously almost became a failed state last year. Things though have since gotten better, but the problems mean the county is still cheap to visit and comparable to Cambodia.

Sadly the visa to get in here is now $60, as opposed to the previous $20, with the inflation being partly down to needing more money, but more so to do with Russian travelers now flicking to the country.

What is there to do in Sri Lanka?

Overall quite a lot, with the country boasting great culture, friendly people and sublime beaches. What you will not find though is a partly like atmosphere, you come for beauty, rather than partying like it is 1999.,

There’s also nature, as well as the ability to traverse the country by train. I took a train along the beach for 40 minutes, which cost be but a mere 7 cents USD, yes you read that right.

So, while a weekend getaway might set you back north of $600, inclusive of transport, food and accommodation it is certainly not as cheap as going to Vietnam, or Thailand.

But you can get from Phnom Penh to Columbo relatively easy and it does make a great change of scenery. And for those interested, but scared to go to India, it offers a kind of “India light” experience. If you can’t cope here, don’t even consider visiting India, but if you can, then that sets up another possible sojourn for you.

Phnom Penh to Columbo was certainly worth it in our minds…
