Cambodia Getaways – Exploring the Pacific Islands
When it comes to getting away from Cambodia most of us tend to stick to the local tried and tested places, but if you are inclined to be a little more intrepid then the beauty of the Pacific Islands is just upon our doorstep.
So, why choose visiting the Pacific instead of say visiting the beaches of Thailand, Vietnam, or even Koh Rong. Quite simply because not only is the beauty unparalleled, but you will also open uptake doors to not just some of the least visited countries in the world, but also the extremely unique Polynesian, Micronesian and Melanesian cultures.
Exploring the Pacific Islands from Cambodia – Getting there
Getting to the least visited country son earth is though no mean, nor cheap feat, with flights ending to be few and far between. Generally speaking this means going via a 3rd country, typically the Philippines, whereby you can then access the nations of the Pacific Islands.
Getting to Manila can be done directly, or if you are on a budget via Air Asia via Kuala Lumpur. You then need to get on the “island hopper trail”, which can be done via direct flights to Palau, or through a direct flight to Papua New Guinea.
Flights to Palau though are not cheap, with it running at around $800 return, similarly priced to Papua New Guinea.
Island hopper services
There are two island hopper devices, namely United Airlines and Nauru Airlines. The former deals with Palau, Hawaii, Micronesia and the Marshall Islands, while the later jumps in and then goes on to Nauru, Kiribati and Fiji. Nauru recently made headlines by switching allegiance to the Peoples Republic of China from Taiwan, another place accessible on this route.
And from Fiji the Pacific is pretty much your oyster, with it being a regional hub that serves Tonga, Samoa, New Zealand and even really out of the way places like New Caledonia, Tuvalu and the Cook Islands.
Flights though are not cheap, nor are the destinations, so the Pacific islands should not be a consideration if you are budget conscious.
Where should I go in the pacific Islands?
This depends greatly on you, what you are into, your comfort levels and what you want to get from your trip, with the Pacific Islands quite honestly offering almost every extreme when it comes to travel.
From a touristic point of view there are high hitters like Hawaii and Fiji that are renowned tourist destinations, with it then flowing down through places like Tonga, Samoa, Palau and the Cook Islands.
All of these destinations offer great beaches, service and of course the creature comforts that you would expect from such popular areas.
It is though with the lesser visited destinations where real adventure lies, with places such as Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Marshall Islands, Nauru and Tuvalu being within the ten seat sited countries on earth,. As such facilities on them vary, and does service and the like, but with Tuvalu in particular if you are brave enough you will be treated to what can only be described as untouched beauty;
Papua New Guinea, Bougainville and the Solomon Islands
If beaches are not really your thing you can fly via Manila to Port Moresby, one of the most dangerous cities on earth, but also a gateway to untouched tribes and a culture that is frankly amazing.
Similar things can be said about both Bougainville and the Solomon Islands, all of which can be done safely should you wish to push yourself to the limit.
So, while exploring the Pacific Islands from Cambodia might not be all that cheap, few experiences can match it, at least if you fall into the adventure traveler category.
