What’s the story with Papua New Guinea?

A former German, British and Australian colony PNG as the locals call it is very much a wonder. Connected to the troubled West Papua region of Indonesia the nation is mixed bag of quite literally thousands of tribes and languages, many of which can be seen front and personal.

Not without its troubles the country does have some internal strife, as well as boasting one of the mist dangerous cities in the world through Port Moresby, but culture and good planning can mitigate these issues.

How to get from Cambodia to Papua New Guinea

The easiest and cheapest way to here from Phnom Penh is to do $200 return to the Philippines and then book early enough for  a Manila – Port Moresby – Manila flight that will set you back around $500.

Other options from Cambodia to Papua New Guinea are via Singapore and Hong Kong, although these flights are much less common.

What do the people of Papua New Guinea think of Cambodians?

The people of PNG are almost oblivious to much of the outside world and saying you are from Cambodia will likely garner little interest. In fact all Asians are simply called Chinaman in the local language, it its likely that is what you will be considered to be.

With that being said though diplomatic relations are OK though and you will certainly not be targeted in any way.

Best time to go from Cambodia to Papua New Guinea

Sadly Papua New Guinea is not the place for backpackers, so you’re best of looking for a package tour. These are usually best arranged around big festivals such as Mt Hagen, as well as the Goroka one, although there are more.

There is also the option to go to unknown gem that is Bougainville, but that will require extra flights and indeed extra planning to a place that may well become the newest country in the world.
