A Ticket to the Circus: An Interview with Craig Dodge of Phare Performing Social Enterprise
Meet Craig Dodge, the Senior Director of Sales and Marketing for Phare Performing Social Enterprise, renowned for Phare, The Cambodian Circus, and Phare Creative Studio. Since joining the organization in 2013, Craig has utilized his 20 years of experience in the tourism industry to help elevate this unique cultural gem.
Founded in 1994, Phare Ponleu Selpak, meaning “The Brightness of the Arts” in Khmer, was born from the vision of former Khmer Rouge refugees and a compassionate French humanitarian. The organization aims to use art as a healing tool for the community, fostering creativity and resilience.
In 2013, Phare launched its social enterprise extension, which has a two-fold mission: to provide graduates with sustainable careers in the arts and to generate revenue that supports the school’s free artistic, academic, and social programs. The centerpiece of this initiative, a mesmerizing circus performance, achieved remarkable success, becoming fully self-sustaining in its second year – 2015 – and by 2019 and funding 60% of the school’s annual budget. However, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted tourism, posing challenges for the circus as it navigated the recovery journey.
A Decade of Highlights and Future Aspirations
Reflecting on his time with Phare Circus, Craig acknowledges the wealth of achievements that have shaped the organization over the years. The circus has emerged as a must-see attraction in Siem Reap,
The circus has also toured internationally, enchanting audiences in countries such as Korea, Taiwan, Australia, France, and Canada. One of Craig’s proudest moments was performing at the Ringling International Arts Festival in 2016, in the hometown of the iconic Ringling Bros. circus. More recently, Phare Circus received critical acclaim in Montreal and even earned a Critic’s Pick from The New York Times during an off-Broadway run in New York City.
During the pandemic, the Phare community achieved an extraordinary feat: breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest circus performance, a proud moment for both the circus and Cambodia.
While the pandemic halted plans for a dinner theater experience in Phnom Penh and an immersive arts experience park, these exciting projects remain in the pipeline, reflecting the organization’s resilience and commitment to future growth.
Creating a Positive Impact Through the Arts
For Craig, the most fulfilling aspect of his role is witnessing the direct impact of Phare Circus on its performers and the community. “This is the first job where I feel a profound connection to making a positive difference,” he shares. Many of the artists, once confined to their rural villages, now lead fulfilling lives, earning a dignified wage that enables them to support their families and travel the world showcasing their talents.

Phare Circus operates as a social enterprise, channeling 100% of its revenue into operational costs, with any excess reinvested into its parent nonprofit organization, Phare Ponleu Selpak. This directly supports free education and social programs, nurturing artistic talent and fostering opportunity for Cambodian youth.
Phare recognizes the significance of cultural exposure for the local community, inviting thousands of Cambodians to experience the circus as guests during the off-season. These performances inspire and empower local youth, demonstrating the potential for greatness.
Beyond the stage, Phare Circus actively participates in community initiatives such as clean-ups and tree-planting, promoting environmental responsibility and civic engagement.
A Love for Cambodia and Its Culture
Reflecting on his journey, Craig never expected Cambodia to become his forever home. Initially planning to stay for a few years to focus on training the sales team, he found himself drawn into the organization’s mission, transforming his role into a personal calling. Now settled in a home he built with his partner and their two dogs just outside the city, Craig embraces the vibrant culture and community of Cambodia.
