A Guide To Clubs In Cambodia

Here is my guide to Cambodian football clubs and who they beat resemble from the English Premier League to give you an idea of who to love when you visit a match here in Cambodia.

1- Phnom Penh Crown….

The Manchester United of Cambodian football. Most successful team, a history of producing young quality players and a coach in Sam Schweingruber that hasn’t been matched. They’re currently making history in the AFC Cup going further than any club from Cambodia ever has. They’ve done historic trebles and will take some doing displacing them as the giants of Cambodian football.

2- Boeung Ket….

They’re Liverpool. In the shadows of their rivals, Phnom Penh Crown, until recent years when they managed to sneak in a title win. Always up there challenging and on their day unplayable.

Lacking the Klopp style coach but in Put Thyda the owner they have someone adored by the fans just as much. In Vatankha they have a Salah.

3- Vishaka….

The Chelsea of Cambodian football who came out of nowhere with buckets of money and begun winning trophies. There is no real history with the club so it’s hard to love them unless you’re a fan. They’re always dangerous but also capable of finishing in the bottom half of the table.

4- Svay Rieng….

They’re the Manchester City of Cambodian football but are just lacking the dominance that their counterparts have. They have worked hard over the years to get the best in class on every area of the club. A coach called Pep and a striker head and shoulders above anyone in Marcus Haber resembling City Haaland.

5- Nagaworld ….

Meet Arsenal, a massive club and were once a big deal but nothing for a few years now has their fans begging for success. They’re always a threat and can beat anyone on their day, but their squad is young and lacks that winning know-how needed.

6- Angkor Tiger…

These boys best resemble Tottenham.

Always promise so much but deliver very little. A loyal and loud fan base which is surprising given they never win anything. The chairman loves the limelight and gets more headlines than anyone else at the club.

7- Tiffy Army….

Hard working and ever present in the top division they’re Everton. Capable of breaking into the top half and rustling feathers of any top side. However they will always be hindered by a lack of consistency and funding to compete with the very best.

8- Kirivong….

Meet: West Ham United. You’re a hammer or you’re not. If you’re not from Kirivong you won’t know anything about them and nor will they accept you as a fan or part of the family.

9- ISI D’ Angkor…….

The rising giants of Cambodian football are Newcastle. With real investment they’re flying up the keys table. The big question is can their current coach handle the pressure or will they be looking for a big name soon to take that bigger step forward and challenge for titles?

10- Prey Veng….

They’re essentially the little brother of Vishaka but are making great strides on their own in the division. Their English counterpart are Brighton. They have to be admired for the football they play and can beat anyone. However there progress is limited to where they are because they will always lose top players when their big brother comes knocking.

11- Ministry Of Interior….

These are Aston Villa. They’re always there in mid table and right now they’re enjoying a new exciting rebirth. Some great night’s in their history.

12- Life FC….

Cambodia’s newest club has come from nowhere and is impressing everyone with the work they’ve done so far. Their English counterpart is Bournemouth, on the coast and steadily growing whilst playing nice attractive football.

13- Siem Reap FC….

A really impressive, well run club that punches above its weight. They’re Crystal Palace. They deserve to be where they are and will produce competition for any team they come across.

14- Angkor City FC…

They are the smallest club by far but have but ambition which, unfortunately, cannot be met given their current financial situation. A hard working club which everyone hopes can do well.
