Bordered by Ratanakiri to the east, Mondulkiri and Kratié to the south, and Kampong Thom and Preah Vihear to the west, it shares its northern boundary with Laos. Etymology
Originally known as “Tonle Ropov,” now referred to as the “Tonle Ropov Area” within Stung Treng, the province’s name underwent changes over time. “Satung Teng,” derived from a monk named “Seang Peng” from Vientiane, evolved into “Xiang Taeng,” signifying a “goddess who has resigned” and “built” in Lao. Eventually, linguistic developments led to the adoption of “Stung Treng,” meaning “River of Reeds” in Khmer.
History
Throughout its history, Stung Treng has been part of various kingdoms and empires, including the Khmer Empire and the Lao kingdoms of Lan Xang and Champasak. Administered by French Lower Laos from 1893 to 1904 following the Franco-Siamese crisis, it was later traded to the French Protectorate of Cambodia. The province witnessed communist insurgent activity during the mid-20th century, enduring U.S. bombings during this period.

Encompassing approximately 11,092 square kilometers, Stung Treng shares borders with Laos, Ratanakiri, Preah Vihear, Kratié, and Kampong Thom provinces.
