Established during the 11th century by the Khmer Empire, Battambang boasts a significant historical legacy. It flourished as a pivotal trading center and played a crucial role in Cambodia’s rice production, maintaining its status as the nation’s leading rice-producing province. Over the centuries, it evolved into a thriving commercial hub and, from 1795 to 1907, served as the capital of the Siamese province of Inner Cambodia. Despite this, Battambang retained its predominantly Khmer population, though it also accommodated ethnic Vietnamese, Lao, Thai, and Chinese communities. Presently, Battambang continues to be a vital nexus in Cambodia’s northwest, fostering connectivity with Phnom Penh and Thailand.

Battambang’s history traces back to the 18th century when it emerged as a bustling trading city with a population of approximately 2,500 residents. Its significance grew when Siam annexed much of northwestern Cambodia in 1795, subsequently ruling Battambang as a provincial capital. However, in 1907, the province was ceded to the French as part of the French Indochina colony. French colonization led to extensive urban planning and modernization efforts, culminating in the development of well-defined streets, urban structures, and key infrastructure such as bridges and railways. Subsequent phases of development under the Cambodian government further enhanced Battambang’s status as a modern provincial capital.
