The Race For Top Four Heating Up, CPL Review: Week 23

Svay Rieng just a couple wins away…..

Svay Rieng are on course to win the league portion of the 2023/24 season and need just two wins from their remaining four games to do so. Many, myself included, feel that should be enough for them to be declared champions but the ‘geniuses’ running football in this country decided to add some play offs at the end of the season. Iago scored against his former club as they ran out 3-0 winners over Angkor Tiger.

Title rivals Phnom Penh Crown defeated Vishaka, at the Prince Stadium, in the battle of Phnom Penh. With a double from Pisoth enough to secure the win and it has to be said that the scoreline flattered the hosts as Crown dominated the game cruelly highlighting the gulf in class between the two teams.

ISI ends Nagaworlds season and Kirivong make a late surge to avoid relegation….

The battle for the top four is heating up as ISI disposed of Nagaworld, with ease, putting to bed any lingering chances of a top four finish for their opponents. ISI have been the surprise package this season after promotion. Naga on the other hand might be the biggest disappointment after a great League Cup campaign but failure to reach those heights again.

Boeung Ket were made to scrap for their win over Kirivong. Vathanaka scored to give them the win. This Kirivong side are improving every week and it’s unfortunate they took so long to get going this season. Boeung Ket still remains the dark horse of this campaign, capable of beating anyone and with the know-how to do so.

The key battles left to play…..

Next week will see Vishaka go up against Svay Rieng and Crown take on ISI. This is one of the remaining four games where the chances of Svay Rieng slipping up is possible. Crown will need to make sure they don’t slip up themselves.
