Phnom Penh Shines: Ranked 9th in World’s Top Tourist Destinations by TripAdvisor

Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s vibrant capital, is currently reveling in the recognition it has garnered from Tripadvisor, which ranked it ninth among the most popular destinations worldwide. In a recent survey conducted by the US-based travel giant, Phnom Penh stood out among the top 25 tourist spots for 2024.

Thourn Sinan, Chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association Cambodia Chapter, expressed pride in Phnom Penh’s achievement, stating, “Phnom Penh being ranked 9th among the most popular destinations by TripAdvisor is a significant achievement for the city and Cambodia.”

He emphasized that this acknowledgment underscores the city’s increasing allure as a travel hotspot, spotlighting its rich blend of cultural, historical, and natural attractions.

Reaching for the stars

However, not everyone fully agrees with this prestigious ranking. Steve Lidgey, General Manager of Travel Asia a la carte, believes Phnom Penh has the potential to surpass the ninth position. He suggests enhancing the city’s night market to rival those in Thailand and maximizing the tourism potential of the riverfront. Lidgey envisions Phnom Penh ascending to the top spot with some strategic improvements.

Craig Dodge, Director of Sales and Marketing of Phare Circus, highlighted the significance of TripAdvisor’s influence on travelers’ decisions. Being featured on TripAdvisor’s “Best of” lists can significantly boost a destination’s visibility and appeal to a broader audience, potentially driving increased tourism and economic benefits.

Sinan emphasized the importance of managing tourism growth responsibly to ensure lasting benefits for the community while preserving Phnom Penh’s unique identity. He underscored the need for sustainable development to balance tourism influx with the city’s cultural integrity.

Developing the future

Despite ranking ninth globally, Phnom Penh is recognized for its affordability in accommodations and dining options, further enhancing its appeal to tourists. Tripadvisor also noted the city’s wealth of cultural and historical landmarks, adding to its allure as a must-visit destination.

In Southeast Asia, Phnom Penh joins the ranks of other esteemed destinations like Sapa City in Vietnam, Pattaya in Thailand, and Kuala Lumpur and Bandung in Malaysia and Indonesia, respectively. This recognition underscores Phnom Penh’s growing prominence as a premier destination in the region, promising continued growth and development in Cambodia’s tourism sector.
