Soulful Cinema Unleashed: All Asian and European Independent Film Festival in Cambodia

Lights, camera, action! Legend Premium Olympia set the stage for an unforgettable cinematic experience as it played host to the All Asian Independent Film Festival and European Independent Film Festival (AAIFF/ÉCU) On-The-Road Tour. The festival showcased 39 captivating films from 22 countries, treating attendees to an enchanting cinematic journey.

Scott Hiller, the visionary Founder and President of AAIFF/ÉCU, expressed his belief in presenting the world’s best independent films. According to Hiller, independent films possess a unique soul, akin to an unputdownable book that lingers in the mind even after the credits roll.

Beyond the film screenings, AAIFF enriched the festival experience with three professional workshops held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons. Covering topics like Cinematography, Directing, and Marketing, these workshops provided a golden opportunity for aspiring filmmakers to delve into the art and business of filmmaking at a cost of $25 for one, $40 for two, or $50 for all three.

Ros Tevoneat, the Managing Director of Legend Cinemas, expressed a commitment to expanding the market for Khmer films beyond Cambodia. Tevoneat emphasized the growth witnessed in the Cambodian film industry, citing the production of approximately 20 films in 2023, a notable increase compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

The impact of international film productions choosing Cambodia as a backdrop for their stories extends beyond the screen. According to Tevoneat, it contributes to the local economy by boosting tourism and offering the world a glimpse into Cambodia’s rich culture.

“As a cinema owned by Cambodians, we want to contribute to the industry,” Tevoneat stated. Legend Cinemas hosted the event and provided free screenings to the public, aiming to encourage local producers and expose audiences to a diverse range of films.

Former Executive Director at Cambodia Film Commission Sovichea Cheap highlighted the local filmmakers’ interest, sparked by the festival’s announcement on Facebook. He noted the enthusiasm among filmmakers who eagerly sought information about the event.

Local filmmaker Moung Rithy echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the rarity of such films in Cambodia and the invaluable networking opportunities the festival provided. Rithy expressed gratitude for the post-Covid era, where workshops served as a golden opportunity for local talents to learn from award-winning filmmakers and absorb their invaluable experiences.

“In partnership with AAIFF, the goals and visions between us both are aligned,” added Tevoneat, emphasizing the collective mission to continuously elevate the Cambodian movie industry and support independent filmmakers.

Legend Cinema’s commitment to technological innovation has consistently marked its mission. Pioneering the introduction of 3D cinema technology in Cambodia and embracing modern formats like Dolby Atmos and Giant Screen, the cinema remains at the forefront of enhancing local cinematic experiences. The Diamond Class halls, offering a luxurious cinema experience, exemplify the brand’s dedication to premium customer service and unique entertainment offerings.

In the heart of Cambodia, Legend Premium Cinema and AAIFF have woven a tapestry of cinematic enchantment, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape and nurturing the growth of the Cambodian film industry.
