Cambodia’s Biggest-Ever Valorant Invitational Set for Launch in Phnom Penh

With a $1,500 prize pool, international teams and open entry format which will see some 68 teams go to war, the Valorant Invitation 2022 is set to be the biggest Valorant gaming competition the Kingdom has ever seen.

The competition, which is being organised by the Cambodia Esports League (CEL) and sponsored by ASUS Republic of Gamers, will be held between March 29 and April 10. Fans can tune in on the discord link provided on the Cambodia Esports League page or by clicking directly here.

But with Valorant currently lagging behind more popular eSports, such as Mobile Legends and PUBG, why a Cambodian valorant tournament now? Event organisers CEL said its testament to the rapidly growing popularity of the game.

““Although it is a relatively new game on the esports scene, Valorant is growing really fast here in Cambodia. Many people are moving to Valorant either for competitive play or just having fun casually with their friends. We’re hosting the tournament to promote the game here in Cambodia and also give the opportunity for players to play at the highest level as they can.”

While it might be fun for some, the competition is set to be deadly serious and CEL has invited a number of already distinguished names in the regional Valorant scene.

“In Cambodia we’ve invited team AG Esports because they’re the winner of Cloudy tournament season 2. And for other countries, we’ve invited team Attack All Around from Thailand, Alpha Esports Pro from Philippines and a team from Indonesia [but they] are unconfirmed as of yet,” CEL added.

CEL hope that by supporting more up and coming eSports like Valorant there will be more opportunity for Cambodians to go pro.

“By hosting tournaments frequently, we hope that players here in Cambodia can have a career as professional players to compete competitively on the international stage. Right now, we’re expanding overseas and our goal is to promote the competitive side of the video game industry.”

Competition will be fierce as first place will bag a sizeable $800, with second securing $350, and third and fourth going home with $175 each.

The competition will be delivered top to bottom with Khmer talent including MengoFlamengo and NaThaN on the commentary team, JustJalerm broadcasting and production by LooDen and Cloudy.

If the sizeable prize pool wasn’t enough, CEL 2022 has thrown down the gauntlet to any Valorant team in Cambodia to test their metal with the open invitation format. That will allow for up to 64 amateur teams battling in single elimination open rounds to be held on March 29 and 30.

However, only four best teams will progress to match the same number of invited teams in the final group stages held between April 1 and 3.

In the final group stages, the top one and two teams from each group will qualify to the upper bracket in the main stage, with the top 3 teams from each group qualifying for the lower bracket in the main stage. The bottom team in each group will be eliminated

The main stage event will then be hosted live between April 7 and April 10, with upper bracket & lower brackets being a best of three, before a best of five final.
