Competition “Seeks” to Find Cambodia’s Best Bartender

Well call me old fashioned, but I love a good competition. And Seekers Spirits – in collaboration with Sabay Media – have served up just that, launching a three round competition to find Cambodia’s best bartender.

Contenders can submit their cocktail recipes for round one in the form of an online photo or video. Round 2 is set to be held live at a host of prestigious venues – including Amber Resort in Kampot, FCC by Avani in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh’s very own Raffles Le Royal. The final round will take place at the Seekers Spirit House.

Results will be revealed on April 8 with the crowned champion set to pocket a neat $1,000, with second and third toasting to $300 and $200 each.

In the mix

Here are the rules. Budding bar tenders must submit recipes that showcase what inspires them about the flavours of Cambodia. They will then be tested on their mixture knowledge, creativity, speed, technique, and if they make the later round events, their interaction with guests while they mix their magic.

Last (drop) but not least, each cocktail must use one of the Seekers Spirits portfolio liquors as their base alcohol.

With entries open to any nationality, the competition is definitely going to stir up some friendly rivalry and competition organisers Seekers say that’s what it’s all about.

“Our aim with this competition is to raise the bar: to set new industry standards for Cambodia’s mixology scene.”

“Neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea are internationally known mixological leaders, boasting establishments listed on World’s 50 Best Bars.”

“Our competition will put Cambodia on the map as home to some of the best bars in Asia.”

Raising a glass

However, Seekers said that the event is not just focused on mixology, but also opportunity.

“Competitions like this aim to create quality and sustainable employment opportunities in the service sector and draw a new flow of tourists seeking this cultural and flavourful attraction.”

“More than simply a showcase of talent, this event is an opportunity for industry professionals to exchange ideas and experiences and to create relationships and for the public to seek out the most creative bartenders in the country and discover new venues.”

So this month, forget your gym membership and open your gin membership, as revelers can expect to be wined and, well, wined again by the best in the business!
